There's a distinct contrast of acting styles & character types in this episode, the naturalistic performances of Clifford Kershaw & Anne Dyson as the meek elderly Northern couple involved with Ward & Blakeney, spiv & small time crook played in more theatrical style by Roy Sone & Alan David. Shame Roy Sone didn't do much acting work, I think he is the best thing about this episode & was also memorable playing the grass Mickey Fielder in 'Law And Order'. I always thought Regan balling out the copper who stopped to pick up the dropped revolver and thereby preventing more deaths with it was well out of order. He half realises it later on. Also Tarrant got shot in this episode! Steven Pacey (Tarrant) in Blakes 7? Gene.

I was watching an episode of Target a few days ago featuring Max Mason as a copper under similar circumstances- he finds a piece of evidence & gets some stick from Hackett. Quite remarkable the number of similarities between the two shows.

Difficult to get right, Sweeney had right combination of actors, writers, locations, on set chemsitry etc.
Bit like a marriage, some work, some ...................!

A bit of an underrated episode this for some reason. I think it's got a lot to recommend it, decent storyline, plenty of great shots of London and some great scenes with Regan and Haskins. Couldn't agree more. The London night scenes round the West End are worth the price of admission alone
The plot about the fake guns, made by the elderly engineer with the sick Christian Scientist wife, is very original. The couple are convincing elderly characters with proper personalities and not just casual stereotypes. Same applies to the agency nurse who is a competent professional who happens to be black.
Roy Sone and Alan David are memorable and convincing as the spiv and the gangster. Alan David reminded me a bit of Johnny Shannon.
Slightly different incidental music too. Add in a young Ray Winstone and Perry Balfour and it's a total winner.

Had the ITV4 repeat of this on in the background this morning.
I need to watch it again.... I am convinced that when Blakeney and his heavies turn up up at Artie Ward's and turf his 'woman' out of bed, it's actually a bloke wearing a wig! Think I'm going diddlo!
I shall report back...

I know it's not one of the top episodes but it's one of my personal favourites. It's got a decent serious story line with some comedy capers as well from Arty

I've had a look & I think you're right Soldier, the profile looks like a man's, look at the chin, definitely wearing a syrup & what we see of the body looks male ( the shoulder area looks male ). Another giveaway is that he/she turns away from the camera, which is not typical for a 'bird pulled out of bed' scene, usually they'd make a point of showing her face or bristols. When she says 'hey get off!' the 'woman's' voice sounds like it was recorded live rather than dubbed but having listened a few times it does sound like it could be a man doing a high pitched voice. Not noticed that before.
