Another one I liked, Regans quote on Ronald Frasers charachter, Titus Oates, "a much underrated fellow!" Maureen Lipman was quite attractive at that time too, I thought. A nice 1976 feel about it too, my favourite year!

I walked over the footbridge at Kensington Olympia the other day, in the opposite direction to the car switch scene, and I always think of Selected Target when I'm there. A lot has changed in thirty-nine years and the station is now extremely busy whilst all land on the Addison Road side is now flats and other dwellings. However, the footbridge survives!
Back in '76, the station had very little use although being on the West london line was, and still is, an important inter-regional freight route, plus Olympia was the location for Motorail services to Perth and St.Austell. The Motorail building is still there although now forms the covering for a car-park as the platform areas that once contained the tracks have been filled in.

I enjoyed Lee Montagues relaxed and laid back performance in this episode. I'd like to have seen a bit more of him near the end of this one though. He disappeared a bit too early. I googled him last week, and it's great that he's still around these days, and active in his community

He doesn't get about too much these days though Charles. I had a letter from Lee a couple of years back and he said he finds it difficult to get about now. A really nice letter from a genuinely nice bloke.
I too think his performances as Kibber in Selected Target & as Arthur Dale in Regan are brilliant.

It's great to hear that Gene. I suspected that you might have written to Lee and I was wondering if he'd replied to you. I'm very happy to hear that he did. I've always liked Lee, and as I said it's great that he's still with us. I believe Lee lives in Hampstead, and from what I hear there are loads of other actors who have lived in that part of London too. I've been there a few times myself and it's a very nice area of London.

Lee is spot on with the Kibber character. I love this episode.

Yes, a great episode but I wonder why the 'air hostess' was never pulled in for questioning?
The look on Jack's face when George askes about her seems to sum up that he thought she was part of the setup too.

There's a review of this ep on imdb that gives some interesting info on the origins of Kibber & Oates names- "In the 1976 episode of The Sweeney titled "Selected Target", Lee Montague's role is that of Colly Kibber, the same name as the murdered journalist and central character in the 1947 classic prototype British gangster film "Brighton Rock". In Graham Green's original novel this character was named Colley Cibber, after the 18th Century English actor/playwright. Some inexperienced script assistants on the '47 film mis-spelled the name with Ks instead of Cs. Now that The Sweeney is out on DVD it would seem that the spelling error has been perpetuated, at least in part, for almost 60 years to a whole new generation of viewers. It seems a nice compromise between putting the spelling back to what it should have been, while paying tribute to one of the great British thrillers. In the same episode, Ronald Fraser's character and "Colly Kibber's" partner in crime, is called "Titus Oates", named for the 17th Century perjurer, traitor and sodomite and the man voted "The worst Briton of the 17th Century" and "The third worst Briton of all time" behind Jack The Ripper and British Nazi leader Oswald Moseley.
