Just watched the end of this on ITV4, 'irons' from 'couple of Aussie irons mugging us' was removed. Censoring rhyming slang is a new one. Not only is rhyming slang barely heard any more, you'd have to be familiar with 'iron hoof' in the first place to know it meant 'poof'.
The laugh is that earlier in the episode Col calls Rumbold a 'puff' & guess what, I've just checked the episode on the ITV player & they've left it intact! I'd love to hear their reasoning for keeping 'puff' in but removing 'iron hoof'. Yeah, and they're probably paying some poor iron to watch all these episodes to take out the naughty bits! Must be an Australian with a knowledge of rhyming slang doing the censoring for ITV4, it's the only rational explanation. I expect when Trojan Bus is shown it'll be edited so Col & Ray escape capture.

I first heard the term iron in an episode of minder and wondered what it meant, or more precisely how it related to puff. Only fairly recently worked out that it was iron hoof. Think that's where I heard it first too and since I never heard elsewhere never quite worked out the hoof bit.

Sorry to veer off topic but here's the Minder episode, see 11 mins in & then 'Australian iron' at 42m 40. Features Keith Bell from 'Big Brother'. Terry is in a really bad mood throughout this episode.
Trivia- one of the two Australian shoplifters is Mike Batt's wife.

Watched this tonight (plus Trap) - coincidentally both feature members of the squad being accused of being corrupt, Jack in Trap and Haskins in Golden Fleece Anyone know how frequent these falsified allegations of corruption were at the time? I guess, given that there was a lot of evidence of Met corrruption during the 70s, that any allegation would have been taken very seriously
I find this episode more annoying than enthralling. Patrick Mower makes a pretty crap Aussie and the attempt to be slightly comedic falls flat for me.
The idea that Haskins might be corrupt is laughable and that's what really undermines this episode, plus why are they trying to frame Haskins anyway? It's not like he's about to rumble them. None of it makes a lot of sense.
It's just the novelty of seeing the squad outwitted which slighlty elevates it
And don't get me started on that stupid music whenver the Aussie duo are featured, or the scenes with their boss at the sports club.

Watching some clips of 'Grange Hill' on youtube I notice that Allyson Rees who plays Miss Lexington ( known as 'Sexy Lexy' ) the computer studies teacher in 6 episodes is the Au Pair in Golden Fleece. Not much on the internet about her other than a few modelling photos-

The daft music that kicks in on a regular basis may be familar to some as the music that The BBC used for many years as their theme to 'Rugby Special' throughout the seventies and the early eighties.

Not sure about being taken very seriously. The commander of the squad, Drury was arrested in '77 and subsequently locked up for corruption, dozens, possibly hundreds of the MET resigned when Operation Countryman was on rather than get caught. I reckon a lot went on and it was bad form to call it out, which is appalling. Wonder how many wrong convictions were made? The way Haskins is prtrayed maybe makes it laughable but in reality it was a likelihood for the real squad, who were so bent you couldn't hang the group picture on the wall straight.
