The sound goes a bit peculiar towards the end, when Judy drives up to the sports centre it sound like there is echo on the car engine track. Anyone else notice? Yes, I've noticed that too. Not sure why that would be, perhaps Sparky can shed some light on this. I noticed this, originally on the ITV4 repeats. So I assumed it was something to do with ITV4 - compression or whatever. Then, I noticed it was also on the Network DVD releases;so I would assume it's something on the actual episode track.
I think there are a couple of scenes in the episode where this happens. I'll have to watch the episode again and see.
I would think it's something at the dubbing/mixing stage; mainly as Network had access to Negatives and Soundtrack masters - so any defects will be on there - and in some cases awkward to remove.
Euston Films were keen to record sound as it actually happened on location - as opposed to record the dialogue, and then dubb effects later on. It's possible that some defect was spotted in the final Dubbing Stages, and so the Dubbing Mixer has tried to mask it or something. Alternatively, it's something to do with the initial sound transfer process (from location tape to editing medium - in this case Sep-Mag) If it was a defect on the location recording, the Sound Recordest would have insisted on a 2nd take.
I'd be interested to know if it showed up on the original 1975 broadcasts. May not have shown up on older TV sets.
Not a definate answer I'm afraid!

I’ve sort of noticed the audio problem is mostly with the ‘Rugby Special’ KPM music they used along with some of the background noise before Judy bails on Col & Ray at the sports club. I might be wrong but I’m sure this is still on the Network DVD too.

Sparky is correct, it is on at least one other scene, also involving a car.

I might be wrong but I’m sure this is still on the Network DVD too. Music would have been added at the Dubbing Stage - so if the defect is on the music, it's something that's happened post-dubb. Possibly when a final mix of the sound was made - or even at the Telecine stage.
Again - I gather network had access to the original Negatives and Soundtracks to make the DVD releases. They don't state which Negatives and tracks.
The Negs used by Network may have been copies, and the originals destroyed (I gather this was the case with the Professionals)
Without getting deep into it - it would have worked something like this: (There's quite a bit more to it, with colour grading and all that)
1) Picture Negative from Camera / 1/2 tape for Soundtrack 2) The Picture Negative would be processed overnight.
The Sound 1/2" tape would be transferred to Sep-Mag - 16mm film that's magnetically coated. (will scan some examples in)
3) The next day, the Editor would start making a rough edit using the previous days picture negative and soundtrack 4) Once the entire episode is 'assembled' - the Director will sit in and make cuts here and there, and notes for dissolves/Effects/Music. The Producers will also view this Directors cut, and also stick and oar in to make edits/changes and ensure it fits to 3 parts and 48minutes.
5) Once everyone is happy, a copy of the original Picture Negative is made and then cut as per the Editors/Director/Producer/Cut 6) A "final" or "answer" print is then printed from the cut negative - at the same time, titles, credits etc are also added in. 7) Sound Dubbing (Music, additional effects etc - crosses over with the Picture Editing) and a "Final Mix" is made onto "Sep Mag". 8) Both the Edited "Answer Print" and "Sep Mag" track are delivered to Telecine for showing or transferring.
From the "Cut" Negative - multiple copies can be printed at will; and also used with different soundtracks too. That's another tale!!
So - any issues with sound and music, would appear around 4 and 5.
Nice 'an Easy Does it..... All the time

A little correction on the above:
It's 1/4" tape that's used for sound recording - not 1/2"!!
Will try and watch Golden Fleece today.

For god's sake Sparky, what's going on?!? Attention to detail! What size bolt is used to hold the capstan on the half inch machine?

As for the capstan..... erm it'd have an awkward little screw, that would hold in a ton of springs that would fly all over the carpet and be lost forever if you removed it.....

Just watched the end of this on ITV4, 'irons' from 'couple of Aussie irons mugging us' was removed. Censoring rhyming slang is a new one. Not only is rhyming slang barely heard any more, you'd have to be familiar with 'iron hoof' in the first place to know it meant 'poof'.
The laugh is that earlier in the episode Col calls Rumbold a 'puff' & guess what, I've just checked the episode on the ITV player & they've left it intact! I'd love to hear their reasoning for keeping 'puff' in but removing 'iron hoof'.

I first heard the term iron in an episode of minder and wondered what it meant, or more precisely how it related to puff. Only fairly recently worked out that it was iron hoof.
