Been watching series 4 lately in the order that the episodes were originally shown 40 years ago but instead of the much maligned Hearts & Minds, I decided to settle on this one instead as it's a much better story, it's got great characters, no ridiculous comedy moments and fabulous action. This is what The Sweeney is all about and this week, I will be watching Taste Of Fear instead of the equally disappointing Latin Lady.

I might just do the same thing myself Kenny. I love Faces and I haven't seen it for a long time.
I love Colin Welland's performance. One of the all time great Sweeney villains.

He was also in the 1st Sweeney film. I liked his fight scene with Evil Willy and the other chap. I reckon he would have had the German as well.

Yes, agree that Welland was great as Tober.
Its the performances of the guest actors that makes this series great, not just the two leads.
This type of TV had some great character actors.

This is one of the very best episodes of all four series. Welland was brilliant and I loved the location filming too.

A job's a job but stuff a pantomime.
Still driving on your clutch? A sign of nerves, that. Can I go into my shop now constable?
It's almost as if the others sit back and enjoy CW who is on top form.

One of the most natural actors of his time Welland. Can't say I've seen him in anything I've not enjoyed.
Faces is no exception.
Gene.

I rewatched this a few nights ago and must echo the universal acclaim for Colin Welland's performance
Right up there with the best Sweeney villains and one of the great acting performances of the entire series
Am I right in thinking that Faces writer Murray Smith never wrote another episode? If so, anyone know why not?
Everything about Faces is top notch - the locations, the cast, the script, the German terrorists, the unrelenting downbeat mood, the blags and the punch ups.
5/5

Here's a list of writers who did just 1 Sweeney episode- Murray Smith ( Faces )
Tudor Gates ( Jigsaw ) Martin Hall ( Golden Boy ) Robert Banks Stewart ( Contact Breaker ) Peter Hill ( Sweet Smell Of Succession ) PJ Hammond ( Pay Off ) Robert Wales ( Loving Arms ) Donald Churchill ( Hearts And Minds )
Smith was in the military prior to writing including the SAS, he was also Scottish which may explain the name 'Tober' as I came across a slang definition of 'tober' as "a Scottish nickname given to those who often get into fights and more importantly win. A Scottish slang word for beating somebody up".
Smith wrote several of Pete Walker's films, on a dvd commentary for one of them Smith is mentioned & Walker refers to him ominously as 'poor Murray', not sure why.
