I can't (off the top of my head) think of anyone else who could have played "Regan". However - much of the Regan & Carter thing was down to Chemsitry too.
Yeah, Ray Winstone tried and failed!

Ray Winston was bad but Drew Peacock or whatever his name is was even worse!

Indeed it did. I think the screen presence and immediate chemistry of the leading actors got it off to a great start. Plus most things with great opening music are good. Wonder who they considered for Regan other than Thaw? The opening music was great - it really set the tone for the entire film. Was the music specially commissioned - or something dug out from the libraries of KPM/De-Wolf/Regency?
The arrangement reminds me of the opening theme to the Euston Films era "Special Branch" - I think Robert Early had something to do with that. Not sure if that was Library music either.
Ted Childs was quick to say that they had all seen "Get Carter" and his vision was that was the way to go. The body on the beach and the music is very "Get Carter".
I am sure I heard (not sure if it was true) that Stanley Baker was considered for "Regan". It may have been Dennis Waterman in one of the commentaries.
But, I'd have thought - if Ian Kennedy-Martin had Thaw in mind for the piece; Baker may have been second - just in case Thaw didn't want to do it.
EDIT: I hadn't seen Arthurs post and link to the article. Great article Arthur. Thanks for posting it!
The theme is called 'The Loner' & features on a Chappell library record called 'Brass And Rhythms' ( not rhyming slang for 'Prostitute And Shoes' I expect ) by Mark Duval And His Music, a house name for various composers, The Loner was written by Cy Payne.

I can't (off the top of my head) think of anyone else who could have played "Regan". There are a couple of Sweeney guest villians I think may have made good a 'Regan'
Chris Ellison or maybe Ian Hendry.
