Cooney won't be too pleased as the housing estate garages off Grant Road/Clapham Junction that he went racing around after the Jag in Stoppo Driver is being redeveloped and built on. Noticed this when I was around that way the other day and so glad we saw it near enough as it was at one of our meets a few years back. What! How's a bloke supposed to have a decent car chase if they keep doing that!

Anyone think that what they paid Conney for driving was a bit large? Was it 5 grand?
That's about 40 grand today!
Same for what that scots git was going to pay to have Jack topped in another episode that escapes me.
Seems to me people would do it for about 500 these days!

Thanks Sparky
Allan Pryor was/is a talented writer; though I feel that the episode should have been passed to someone like Trevor Preston, or even Tony Hoare (if he wasn't locked up in Wormwood Scrubs that is!), as both writers always had an harder edge to their writing - perhaps because they "knew" the London Underworld pretty well....
So, would you say Trevor Preston was the best writer on the show?
If not, who gets that honour?
That's a question open to anyone who wants to express an opinion
All of the writers are generally pretty good but if I had to choose one I’d have to go with Trevor Preston as his episodes from Ringer to Poppy, Stay Lucky Eh? to Bait, are some of the best Sweeney episodes I personally like… although think Messenger of the Gods was a bit of a clunker from him when he tried to inject a bit of humour instead of his usual gritty style. Out too is also very, very good looking at things from the ex-con/villain’s side of things and Fox was also fairly good too.
That’s not to say I didn’t like and rate highly other writers on the show for example the likes of Murray Smith (Faces), Tony Hoare (In From The Cold/One of Your Own), TKM (Selected Target/Hard Men), Ranald Graham (Supersnout/Nightmare) and Roger Marshall (Taste of Fear/On the Run/Victims) have all done great episodes that I’ve enjoyed too and some of these writers like Trevor Preston have done good things beyond The Sweeney too.
To be fair all the writers did write a few stinkers along the way too but generally they’re head and shoulders above much of today’s cream of British film and TV talent!

Hard to answer; the Sweeney had a core of writers. Trevor Preston was known for doing the "Hard ones", Troy Kennedy Martin did the "Funny ones", Roger Marshall did the "clever ones" - though many of the other writers brought in, I thought were great.
For me, I think it's either going to be Tony Hoare (though he did more on Minder) or Trevor Preston - as they both knew the London underworld quite well (I think Preston knew both the Krays and Richardsons), Tony Hoare was at one time, a Getaway driver and tied up in London gang circles. So it felt that their stories always had a bit more authenticity about them.
One episode of Tony Hoares was finished off while he was locked up in Prison in 1976 - he wrote it in a Prison Exercise book and bribed a Prison Guard to smuggle it out and take it to Euston Films. (I think it was "In from the Cold").
Thanks Sparky
And thanks also to Dirty Epic, Cartman, Vienna and Gene Hunt
I've never paid close attention to the writers so your comments are really helpful
As I rewatch them for the umpteenth time I'll pay more attention to the differences in writing style and, if I can think of anything insightful to say, I'll chip in with a few musings.

Each writer on the Sweeney I felt, brought their own style or voice to their episodes. I always liked Ranald Grahams work too.
Even Ted Childs wrote a couple himself!

The beauty of all the writers on The Sweeney was they all brought their own perspectives and had a different take on the characters with their style and writing for the show. It's probably why it never went stale or boring compared with shows written and created by one writer/producer/director.

Spotted what appears to be a blooper watching this last night... (but I had enjoyed a few Scotches)
The Drivers side indicator on NHK295M gets knocked out mid drive along with the front of the wing and then later appears to be repaired..
And has anyone else noticed that Haskins appeared to be drinking sherry or scotch at Cooney's wedding and then George tops his drink up with Fizz on top ;-) - He didn't bat an eyelid - maybe he was trying to null that Ulcer pain?

Well spotted B16YUG but sorry to say that these continuity errors have been raised before. There are others in the same chase such as windows down in one frame, up the next, and the same for the radio aerial being up and down. It wasn't an electric aerial either so Cooney wouldn't have turned it to 247 Radio One midway through the chase and hoping to hear a chart rundown. Sam.
