Watched Sam Peckinpah's film 'Convoy' last night after reading this thread, saw it in the past on tv but not for some time. The film didn't make much sense, some truckers get in trouble with a corrupt cop & decide to leave the state in their trucks rather than serve jail time. The film follows them as they somehow become nationwide 'folk heroes' for doing so, attracting the attention of an opportunistic politician looking to get elected on the back of the following the 'rebel' convoy has attracted.

I think I liked Convoy as a kid and remember all of it's hype at the time but these days it doesn't make a great deal of sense to me too Art. It's sort of like a more realistic/grittier version of Smokie and the Bandit crossed with Vanishing Point for me.

Convoy, though based on a C&W song, was written by Bill Norton who had previously made a very good film with Kris Kristofferson & Gene Hackman called 'Cisco Pike'. Gene Hackman was apparently approached to direct 'Convoy'. Peckinpah was a cocaine user & a heavy boozer, James Coburn did some directing on the film when Peckinpah was in no fit state to do it.

I love how popular CB radio was (and still is to a lesser amount these days)...
All I know of it is when my dad used to be a cabbie in the 80's and he co-owned a firm called Lion Cars and their call signs were Tiger 1, Tiger 2, Tiger 3 etc etc...!
As a very young boy I thought that was exceptionally cool!!!

Reminds me of an episode of 'On The Buses' called 'Radio Control', the drivers are given two way radios to communicate with Blakey & have to learn the 'Letter Code For Radio Controlled Buses'. Blakey- 'A for Able, B for Bertie, C for Charlie...' Jack- 'As far as I'm concerned C only stands for one thing' Stan- 'What's that?' Jack- 'Crumpet'
Stan's handle is 'Sugar Bertie'.

I have to use a radio system at work but unfortunately with the computer based control of it you can easily be recognised. Years ago it was more open based and the kind of humorous things that happen in OTB did occur.

CW McCall just died I heard, he wrote the Convoy song.

Had a look at his wikipedia page, his real name is Bill Fries, he got into music through his work in advertising & took his name from a magazine called 'McCalls' & 'C.W'' from Country & Western.
RIP CW.
