I happened to see this episode on ITV4 the other day and realised something was missing when Jack comes off the phone and says "Clarke's away" The best bit is cut out.. That non stick B****** Still a great episode cut or not. They've got to find a way to cram the 25 or so advert breaks into the hour somehow.
When Sweeney was originally shown advert breaks were the top of the hour, twenty past and twenty to the hour. Now it's almost as bad as the US tv.

They've got to find a way to cram the 25 or so advert breaks into the hour somehow.
When Sweeney was originally shown advert breaks were the top of the hour, twenty past and twenty to the hour. Now it's almost as bad as the US tv. The IBA (who kept a beady eye on ITV companies) laid down regulations on how long Ad Breaks should be, and how many should be within an hour. They were quite strict.
Based on this; Producers could draw up a format for their programmes (often called a "Bible") which was dished out to every writer for the series - that would lay out guidelines that an individual episode should stick to.
The script had to be written to account for ad breaks, for Part 1; the minimum running time was roughly 9minutes (9ish pages of script) and a maximum of 16minutes (16ish pages of script) before the first ad break. Not sure on the exact details.
Within an hour's show, there would be 2 ad breaks - the 1st one sometime between the 9th & 16th minute, and the second about 15-20minutes in to Part 2.
So - as you say, including Company Logo + Titles, Break Bumpers - the first ad break would be about 20min in.
The format/bible for "The Sweeney" is published in a couple of books - and that told writers to provide around 50odd minutes of story. The titles & ad breaks would roughly make up the missing 10minutes.
