It went out at 9pm Alex & according to a book on Euston Films I have, the viewing figures were over 7 million for series 1 ( 7th & 10th position in the top 10 programmes on all 3 channels, This Is Your Life & Love Thy Neighbour consistently at no.1 ), rising to nearly 9 million in series 2 ( 2nd place in the top 10, The Generation Game & Man About The House were no.1 ), up to 8.5 million in series 3 ( This Is Your Life, George & Mildred & The Generation Game at no.1 ) & almost 14 million for a series 4 episode as it went out near Christmas.
The Sweeney was sold to 51 countries according to the book & was apparently the first English language show to be screened on South African tv, albeit dubbed in Afrikaans. It was popular enough in Spain for Jack Regan to be featured in a comic strip.

This is a TV Times article promoting the 1970/71 LWT serial 'Manhunt' though I thought it may be of interest as it relates to the trade in war memorabilia & features a London shop not unlike Soldier's, though as the shop was in South London it's doubtful it was the one seen in Ringer. Wonder how many, if any, of these shops still exist in the UK? It mentions Chris Farlowe, one of Britain's best soul singers & frontman of Atomic Rooster, had a militaria shop.

Interesting about vehicles too, wonder what that shopkeepers doing now and where the vehicles are now? Possibly in museums or went abroad? Also Gorran in Sweeney 2 was a Nazi memorabilia collector too...........

There's a mention of the shop owner ( Bill Tobin ) on this page- www.wehrmacht-awards.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27682&page=2Forgot about the fellow in Sweeney 2 & of course the German helmet in a couple of episodes. Motorhead's Lemmy collected military memorabilia, not sure if he just owned Nazi items, he had a large collection of daggers, he gave some to Keith Emerson when he roadied for The Nice, during live shows Emerson would stab them between the keys of his keyboards.

Dad could have let him have some, when they were let out of the POW camp at the end of the war, the German guards did a runner as the Russians were approaching so the prisoners raided the stores and Dad grabbed a few daggers and some other stuff, he looked for a Luger but couldn't find one. He brought the bits back but my gran binned them during a spring clean some time in the 50s, apparently!

What a great opening episode this is!
By the way, one of the police escort motorbikes 310 KOU comes back as a black 1964 649cc Triumph, tax due 1st Dec 85, the second is a 1960 650cc tax due 1st Mar 2020 so still going!!
Not exactly new bikes in 74 were they!

I love this episode. A direct contrast to Regan which was more of a tough police procedural drama with only one major action sequence. Ringer is faster paced, more aggressive and exciting. However, in recent years, I've come across negative reviews of the final fight scene with some fans noting poor editing (you can't see everything that's going on and John Thaw is fighting with Peter Brayham when really, it was supposed to be Alan Lake). Plus it's supposed to be a street corner they're fighting on but you see some derelict wasteland at the point where Kemble gets killed. Nevertheless, it's a great scene. Pity they couldn't find the original negatives to digitally restore in HD.

I watched this episode last night, starting series 1 again - ahead of me seeing NHK295M in the flesh at the NEC.
I had forgotten - and I was expecting to see the Consul with Jack in it, but no the Consul was instead being used by Haskins when they went to arrest the dodgy brief. Although it was difficult to zoom in on the plate to confirm it was 295M.... anyone know for sure?
Before reading this thread and watching it I though the age reference of the car thieves was wrong too!
And then I got thinking why the title of "RINGER" - a dead Ringer? - The Mini was going to be Ringed? - or a synonym for counterfeiter? And Kemble's business was funny money, and we heard the reference to the funny money that Dave Brooker gives to the 20 something Billy - clearly not 19 ;-) eh? - Maybe a scene was edited out that gave a better reference to the title, of have I missed something more obvious?
Great dialogue and also good to see June Brown in younger years... I'd I noted I remember seeing Ian Hendry (Dave Brooker) in Brookside - Brooker in Brookie!!!

I think "Ringer" refers to ringing cars. Billy Martin says to Stupid that they'll "sell this one straight", inferring that that they could well have given it dodgy plates and sold it bent.
