Very sad news.
We may not have known much about the man but we sure knew his music. He wrote the music for "Countdown" clock, and donated the royalties to pay fees for underprivileged music students. Every time it plays, someone gets a bit of time in college. RIP Alan Hawkshaw.

Sad news indeed.
A major contributor to so many themes and incidental music over the years I think the earliest tune that I have to listen to beginning to end has to be the Dave Allen theme, classic tune that never fails to bring a touch of nostalgia to me.
R.I.P. Alan

Amazing just how much Alan's work featured on TV aside from Countdown and Grange Hill - and not realized. A lot of his work would feature as interval music between schools programmes- mainly on ITV, alongside work by Brian Bennett and Johnny Patrick,
The first Give Us a Clue theme in 1979 utilised an odd orchestration of the same piece used for Grange Hill. (Chicken man?)
Both pieces would have been on air at the same time.
Here's a clip of Give us a Clue - apologies for the quality.
