It's a film I've not seen but heard about/meant to but does Radio On fit the bill here? isn't it B/W film of Sting driving around and not a lot else but a soundtrack set to Bowie, Kraftwerk, Ian Drury and Robert Fripp! Sting only has a small cameo in Radio On, but the film does centre around the protagonist's road trip with minimal dialogue and it's definitely a bit arty rather than action packed. I cobbled together a bit of a review a few months ago if you want to find out a bit more. 43tv.proboards.com/thread/2378/radio-on-1979-film

Thinking about this, I could have done my own version of this film.
I had a road trip from Manchester to Brighton in the late summer of 1980, in my Austin A40, and I remember plenty of great stuff on the old Motorola radio for the two days I took to get there, stayed in Wendover for the night.
A few I remember listening to were
Hazel O Connor 8th Day Split Enz I got you Abba The winner takes it all Odyssey If you're looking for a way out Sheena Easton Modern Girl Pirahnas Tom Hark

She had one of those auto-reverse cassettes and had the same Chris De Burgh album on continuously on the M5 and M6. That was about 7 hits from Chris on continuous rotation for hours. The positive side is that she inadvertently invented the format for Heart FM. (Girlfriend in a Skoda - sounds like a rejected Smith's song title...)

It's one I've heard about but never really fancied? A very arty film but, if you are partial to that kind of thing, worth a view especially for the many period location shots
Plus, as you say, music is top notch

Great shout on That Summer, Lord Em. I think there is a thread on it in 70s TV and film. Here you go >>> That Summer <<<Gene. I watched this due to it being mentioned on here and yes, an average coming of age film made better by the soundtrack which was superb. Another film I wouldn't have known about or watched were it not for this forum

Xanadu. The film is absolutely kack, but some of the music in it was good, by ELO and Olivia Newton John. The title track, and Magic, by Olivia, and I'm Alive, All over the World by ELO.

I can't dispute that Carty. I remember when the film was released, Annie wanted to go to the flicks to see it. I was happy to go too even though I wasn't interested in the film - but I did lust after ONJ. The music was good and at the time I bought the soundtrack album on vinyl for Annie for her birthday. We've since bought the album again when it was released on CD but we've never seen the film again. Sam.

Olivia Newton John was too unbelievably ace for words!
I've also remembered two other songs from it, Suddenly, by Olivia and Don't Walk Away by ELO

I'm having my lunch and the thought of you lusting has put me right off my tin of mackerel in spring water.
