It was an option that could have breathed new life into things however I do agree that it wouldn't have been as good as the show that spawned it. The Sweeney went out on top of the ratings but for me it ended abruptly and left a huge void. Minder followed and Euston concentrated on that and made a good series out of it. It's success was one of the reasons The Sweeney wasn't resurrected. There is no doubt the public had an appetite for more, ITV repeated it for years after it finished. The Sweeney went out at exactly the right time. There were signs in series 4 that it was starting to run out of steam a little, although some episodes in it were still top drawer. I agree about Series 4 but for me at least 5-7 episodes from it are still top drawer and up there with everything else they made. A Carter spin off could have happened if Minder didn't take off, initially like The Sweeney it had a slow start but sometimes and for me things come to a natural end and are best left there. Still some good ideas on this thread and enjoyed reading them.

Spin Off series would only happen if one or more of the original cast was interested, and many of the series we and many other people are fans of, only worked with the original cast. Also the cast members have sometimes decided to call it a day anyway so best to end it there, like The Sweeney did.
It's always fun to speculate of course; E.g What would Terry McCann have got up to after clearing off to Australia, and leaving Arthur Daley in the lurch for a short while in Minder? Would have had to have been filmed in Australia, so maybe Terry got in with a Sidney based ducker and diver and some local rival hardmen wouldn't have taken too kindly to this new gatecrasher............
It was also mooted at one point, that The Professionals could have continued after Martin Shaw and Lewis Collins left, with 2 new younger leads replacing them, but would they have been as popular? And it may have only lasted another series perhaps and depended on the scripts for any future episodes. Gordon Jackson was apparently quite happy to continue in his role. If that was the case, maybe the late 90's reboot they made might not have happened.
Another to consider (for fun) is a Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads spin off, of perhaps Terry McCann on his own, with new exploits, after deciding there was nothing much left for him in Gateshead and maybe moved to London for new ventures; Which I believe has been speculated by Likeley Lads fans, that he started a business and did very well out of it and ended up doing better than Bob ultimately! If it had gone the other way, with a Bob and Thelma spin off, it would have just descended into a rather lacklustre domestic sitcom, too much like "Terry and June"!

No mistaking there Gerry, seeing Terry McCann in a WHTTLL spin off would have been fun! Perhaps he could have teamed up with Terry Collier and formed The Two Terrys? Sam.

Ha Ha! I realise what I unintentionally did there!!!
As you say that could have been interesting.... The Two Terry's!! (seeing as they both went on to do New Tricks years later!). Yes I meant Terry Collier of course

It was a big missed opportunity (I think) when Arthur and Ray went to Australia to not see Terry McCann in Minder... That would have been a wonderful little cameo although not strictly a spin-off!! Having said that with Terry's complexion (much like mine; pale and scared of the sun!) I doubt he made much of the great outdoors in Oz! With regards to The Professionals I think they were trying to flesh out CI5 in the 4th filming block by introducing Murphy (the late Steve Alder) so some of the focus could fall away from Bodie and Doyle every now and again... Again though, that would not have been a spin-off but more a change of cast. It would have struggled to have worked though as, much like The Sweeney and so many other shows, the main pull for viewers were the heroes of the shows themselves!! I suppose we have to consider where a spin-off starts and a change of show (in terms of cast and location) ends!!
