"Weekend World" at lunchtime was another reminder that school was just round the corner. Ah yes, presented by Bwian Walden, an ex Labour MP who took up TV journalism. I think by the time Brian appeared, I'd left school and was actually interested in what was being discussed. Having said that, I can't remember any notable interviews but do remember it had a cracking prog rock theme tune called Nantucket Sleigh Ride. A bit like the World In Action theme. On Sunday mornings on ITV you got the inevitable Morning Service religious programme, followed by Farming Diary made by Anglia. The commercial breaks plugged farming related products, fertiliser, farm animal food and occasionally a farming safety PIF. There was one particular PIF I remember of a farm worker trying to un-jam some farming equipment like a hay bailer but forgetting to turn off the motor. The frame freezes just as the jam clears and catches his hand in the mechanism. I've never seen this one on any PIF compilations.

The Late Show was on BBC2 after Newsnight, I think you'll have seen it. All a bit pretentious with the likes of poet Tom Paulin & art critic Brian Sewell pontificating but it did have some interesting stuff on it including live bands, famously a Stone Roses performance which was cut short by a power failure, the clip sometimes gets shown on those 'worst of tv' compilations. Note- F word at the end of the clip.
Arthur, I remember this being on a lot in the 90s. Journalists Tony Parsons and Allison Pearson were regularly on it with Tom Paulin. Didn't Newsnight presenters like Kirsty Walk and Gavin Esler present it or something similar to it in more recent years? Vi Yes & then I think it fizzled out & wasn't on any more. They did a 'horror special' one Halloween night in the 90's featuring a round table discussion with John Carpenter, Clive Barker, Roger Corman & others.

Howards' Way was a favourite of my mum's. Fry And Laurie did a send up of it, at least they cited the programme as an influence on those sketches they did of two high powered businessmen saying 'damn!' a lot if you remember them.
The song 'Nantucket Sleighride ( To Owen Coffin )' is taken from Mountain's 1971 album 'Nantucket Sleighride', the song is about a failed whaling trip, only part of it was used for the 'Weekend World' theme. No idea why they chose it, it seems a very odd choice for a current affairs programme.

I think Morning Service was one of those ITV programmes that was made by different regions - depending on where the service came from.
If I remember on ATV - and for a while during the early years of Central; we had a handful of local programmes.
Farming Today (later renamed Farming '82, Farming 83... etc), Angling Today, Link (which was aimed at Disabled viewers), Getting On and one called All About Toddlers... A few of these programmes would also pop up last thing on a Sunday night - just before closedown.
BBC2 would have just been Open University and endless intervals with the Test-Card.
Didn't BBC1 show a morning service type programme?

BBC1 also used to use Sunday mornings for specialist programmes. From memory there were magazine type shows for Asian viewers, a few language learning shows and Brian Rix fronted a show for people with learning disabilities called Let's Go. As you say, ITV would vary region to region. I have a vague memory of YTV showing repeats of Play Guitar With Ulf Goran on Sunday mornings and Toolbox with Mike Smith (not the DJ) who would knock up a coffee table in his shed in half an hour. As for late nights, I think YTV used to screen some of the lesser known American crime series like The Streets Of San Francisco, Banacek etc just before closedown.

I've seen the Play Guitar.... series! Blimey!
The DIY/Play Guitar type series came off the back of Schools Programmes - where producers had the idea for Adult Education Programmes. ITV did broadcast 'Out of School' - mainly over Christmas and out of Term Time - previewing next terms forthcoming programmes.
ATV and a couple of other companies (Anglia and Grampian being two) did broadcast previews of forthcoming Schools Programmes early or late on a Sunday. These would also be shown under the banner 'Out of School' where sections of the programme would be shown, and then studio discussion would take place. This was aimed at Parents and Teachers.
The ITV Schools programme Good Health and Living and Growing were the discussions I remember seeing - both series created quite a bit of conversation when they were first aired.

So, for me my frightful Sunday night would consist of (and I cant remember the order precisely!)...
- Songs of Praise - Antiques Roadshow - Last of the Summer Wine - Lovejoy (or maybe Heartbeat) BATHTIME - BEDTIME - FIN
It's making me sweat just thinking about it!!!!!
