Sad news!
I remember when we were kids our parents used to watch his show. Most of the time we'd be bored until he'd get to the inevitable "Paddy McGinty's Goat" or "O'Rafferty's Motor Car"

Perhaps remembered by many for his rocking chair and multicoloured jumpers, but he also had many hit records and a no.1 album in the 1960s.
RIP Val Doonican

Sorry I'm late with this. Val came across as a hell of a nice guy. I wish there were a few more like him on the telly today. R.I.p.

One more thing about Val, I remember David Jason saying in his autobiography that Val was a mate of David's brother Arthur and sometimes attended their family parties. We seem to be losing a lot of good people lately.

He was the kind of artist who could compete with The Beatles and Stones for record sales in the mid 60s.
A favourite is 'Elusive Butterfly' (1966). In those years there could be US and UK versions of the same song in the charts simultaneously.
In this case both Val's and Bob Lind's versions reached no. 5 in the UK chart. It was actually Lind who had written the song.
Like a lot of MOR artists, Val began to do TV work simultaneous with his singing career in the 60s. Then concentrated on TV from the early 70s, which is probably how many on this forum remember him.
RIP Val Doonican.
