Like most people I expect I remember eating Black Forest gateau a lot, no idea why they went out of fashion. Instant Whip. There was a dessert in the late 80's I'm trying to remember the name of, I think it was an alternative to ice cream, it came in a small tub & was an off white colour, whatever it was I remember eating it a lot. 'Ice Magic', an ice cream sauce that when went hard on ice cream, I remember squirting that on a frozen surface then eating it like a piece of chocolate.
You can still get something like Ice Magic (though under a different name) and not in the same type of bottle. We had some last summer - think it was "Askeys Crackin Ice Cream Topping"
Though you can't seem to get the Mint or the Orange flavoured chocolate ones you did in the 80s.

Bird's Eye crispy pancakes. A sort of crunchy crust with a filling. I liked them. If you cooked one in the 80's, it's probably just cool enough now to eat Hotter than the sun ! I'm sure I have recently seen Bird's Eye crispy pancakes in Morrison's packaged in a sort of Old Favourites Brought Back style. One of those things I spotted earlier this year and thought "Mmm, I'll maybe try some next time I'm here and relive the days of a burnt mouth", but couldn't find any when I revisited. Maybe they were a limited edition. Does anyone remember those frozen "Minute Steaks" you could get in the early 80s ? They weren't much thicker than a sheet of paper but would literally cook from frozen in the frying pan in one minute. Now I've been veggie since 1990 so I don't know whether they are still around, but back in the day the works canteen would churn them out at breakfast time and I was once a fierce consumer of them. I was also a fat b**** back then.... oh, alright... a bit more of a fb than I am now As for Angel Delight, I always thought that was the posh family's Instant Whip ! There was always at least one flavour of either brand which had a faint taste of soap.

Remembering one of the deserts Arthur mentioned, we used to have a "cook in the tin"/steamed pudding, which was quite nice with vanilla custard, either toffee or treacle type sauce. When ready to serve it could be shaken in one cylindrical shape out of the tin. (A bit like how it was extracted from the tin in Pedigree chum dog food adverts - but I digress, this about food humans ate! Lol!).
Who remembers the school dinners at the time? There was of course Semolina, which was either served with a bit of jam, or grated chocolate which was then stirred up with the desert spoon to turn it pink or chocolate brown!
And sponge cake with iced topping and multi coloured sugar sprinkles on top (also known nicknamed "Hundreds and Thousands").
I think you can still get Bird arctic Roll. Quite like that too.

I remember those Heinz puddings in a tin. I was always afraid they would explode, I’m sure there’s a British infantry division equipped with. For firing not eating.

Heniz used to do Big Soup Stews and Hot Pot in a tub great stuff but they disappeared a few years back sadly. The tinned soups aren't bad but not the same as the tubs.

In the days before Soda Stream, we made do with Creamola Foam: If that seems a little juvenile, how about some junior beer:

Also Fray Bentos meat pies in a tin, which I quite like. Incidentally, Fray Bentos is the name of the town in Uruguay where they are made. Bit of triv!

And we all survived without Best Before and Use By dates! I have to admit I still treat Best Before as merely a suggestion. To the tune of "As Time Goes By"... A tin of Irish Stew, from 1982When opened gives a sighBut heat it up and you won't dieAs time goes by....And of course there's always the Two Second Rule for anything that hits the kitchen floor....Mmmm just me then ?

I use the “if it isn’t green” rule for eat ability.
