Today, I went to fill up the van, and half asleep, started putting petrol in by mistake. After about a tenners worth had gone in, I realized and stopped. The tank was on about a quarter full of diesel before I started, and when I had realised my mistake, I then filled it up to the brim with diesel.
It doesn't seem to have had any ill effects and the van ran just as normal for the rest of the shift. I mentioned it to the bloke at the next drop off, who I get on well with, who said providing that it's diluted with diesel it's ok.
Anyone else done this?

My Jamie did it the other way around, put a fiver of diesel in a petrol engine and then brimmed it with petrol and kept topping up every time it drained it a little. Didn't have any adverse effects.
Think you'll be OK.

Bolly did it a few years back in my 3 litre diesel Audi. Put about 10 quid of petrol in before realising and she called me in a flap. I told her to fill up with diesel and she did and then drove home. As soon as I reached half a tank I refilled with diesel again and it never missed a beat.

I think the risk is the reduction in lubrication that the petrol causes, however if you have topped off with diesel and therefore heavily diluted it and take it easy while you burn through that tank you'd hope it would be OK. Plus do what Gene did and top it again when you've used half.

Hopefully you should be okay Carty.
I think as the others have said the problem happens if you either tank it with the incorrect fuel and/or not top it up with the correct one. Could be wrong but also modern vehicles I think don't have the same engine wrecker qualities they had say 20 odd years ago.
I'm sure I've done it myself and (just about) got away with it in the past.

I nearly did it last year.
I accidentally picked up the Diesel pump and shoved it in the filler. Totally oblivious.
The Petrol Station attendant came out shouting - "Do you realise you're sticking deisel in - you normally come in that car and stick petrol in". Fair play to him for that. At lease he was on the ball that day!

The van was running well today too, but I stuck another tenners worth of diesel in in the afternoon to dilute it a bit more.
By about Tuesday it will be down to about half full so I'll fill it up fully then. Looks like I might have got away with it! Phew!

My son put half a tank of petrol in a diesel but as he always runs it low he had to pay for the tank to be drained at the forecourt. Cost 200 sovs The car was fine though as fortunately he didn't try to start it.

I remember this Fifth Gear feature putting Petrol in a Diesel from the 2000's.
