40 years...!!! Crikey...!
I live in Margate now (fancied some sea air!) so I am always having somewhat of a 'Jolly Boys' tour...!!
Thanks for sharing that BBC article... Some great pictures there.

That's great they managed to find and restore those old photos of the behind the scenes crew of OFAH. Always did have a soft spot for this series and don't really remember the 1st series either, which had a different theme tune only for that series, before the more well known one. And apparentley it was writer John Sullivan who performed the opening and closing themes, not as was often thought, Nicholas Lyndhurst.
I picked up on the series from about '84 onwards (possibly seeing repeats of the earlier ones and the latest series at the time), including the famous Chandelier dropping one, on its first transmission. Always enjoyed Del's dialogue as schoolkid at the time, and was well written.
People say they it went downhill when the 50 minute ones started to be produced but I enjoyed them when they started, as it was more of what we already enjoyed, although when the series went past 1999 it maybe had gone on a bit long.
It looked like the main cast members enjoyed making the series!

I wasn't the world's biggest fan tbh. It was one of those programmes which I thought was just ok, rather than outstandingly good. The early episodes I definitely thought we're better than the later ones.
It paralled Minder to a large degree, same time period when both were on, similar premise, Cockney wide boys, and both were dragged on too long, started well but ended up shadows of their early self.

I think it outstayed it's welcome a little, though not as much as Last of The Summer Wine which they milked for far too many years. But the earlier ones had classic moments - the inflatable doll consignment, the chandellier, Batman and Robin etc.

To me, it's been over repeated, and the best bits have been seen so many times that the programme has been reduced to a handful of scenes. It was new and fresh for the first two or three series, but then seemed to gain widespread popularity and then became tired.
Later on It went a bit down the soap route I thought.
Overall, I think it is a touch overrated and between the funny moments there was a fair bit of mediocrity, which led to a feeling that there was a lack of consistency in the episodes.

Having recently watched 'Citizen Smith' on Forces TV it's very much a dry run for OFAH, in fact I saw an interview with Robert Lindsay on yt where he remarks upon the similarities, comparing Wolfie Smith to Del Boy.
I think what John Sullivan did very well was dialogue, what he wasn't so good at is telling a story, the storylines in Citizen Smith & OFAH tend to be fanciful & very often implausible. I think casting is all important in comedy & they got very lucky with David Jason & Lennard Pearce.
A good show but it's been repeated so often that people tend to overlook its shortcomings. I don't think, writing wise, it's in the same league as 'Dad's Army'.
