Interesting Dirty, I've not heard of 'Licensed To Drill' before. There's a copy of it on dailymotion with, aptly for Del Boy, Croatian subtitles!
I much prefer the Grandad era, I know it's a well loved show but I think like other shows it lost its way once Del Boy & Rodney got wives, they opened things out too much & the cosy dynamic between the 3 of them, which imo was at the heart of the show, was lost.
Sullivan's strength was his dialogue, I don't think his stories were great, they tended toward fantasy rather than the reality of life for market traders living in a tower block. I also think there's an inconsistency at times, Del Boy is supposed to be street wise but at the same time he's very green, whilst Rodney is portrayed as both quite clever & a 'plonker'.
Ok it's a sitcom & doesn't bear close analysis but I think it would've benefitted from a harder edge, same goes for 'Citizen Smith' which was crying out for some relevant social comment given the lead character was supposed to be a Marxist.

I never watched Only Fools and Horses all the way through, I liked it in its early days, but it went on too long, very similar situation to Minder.

I think when the '96 Xmas Special saw them 'become Millionaires' they should have left it there, perfect ending. Never really watched the spin offs Rock n Chips and The Green Green Grass although they may be alright-ish. Just never appealed to me.

What I've seen of The Green Green Grass has been
John Challis seems to like being Boycie though, judging by his twitter his life seems to revolve around the character. He's done a documentary on OFAH's popularity in Serbia- www.boycieinbelgrade.com/Not a poisoned chalice then being forever known as Boycie
I've noticed OFAH branded merchandise on zavvi, looks like someone is making a lot of money selling plastic tat with things like 'He Who Dares Wins' written on it. I read that David Jason has or had a deal going signing OFAH items for some Del Boy type.

As a child of the 80's I have to say that 'Only Fools and Horses' is, without doubt, one of my favourite television comedy shows and easily one of the best of all time...
It is very much of its time which makes it even more enjoyable as its a lovely, familiar, laugh out loud time capsule!
It's truly a joy to watch and watch I do!!

I don't really remember watching the first series of OF&H in late '81, although I suppose it didn't really become popular until S2 or S3. Other successful shows such as Minder also took a while to get going.
