Motorway service areas have never had a brilliant reputation, but I can't help thinking the era when they were owned by groups like Trust House Forte and Granada, with half decent eateries and facilities, rather than the inevitable Burger King/KFC's shoved under the roof were better days. The prices in them were also 1/2 reasonable too. I had to stop at Penrith Services on the M6 a year or two back - I nearly collapsed at the prices in a couple of the outlets.

I don't use motorways much these days so correct me if I'm wrong, but I haven't seen one of these signs for years. Do they now assume that motorways have been around long enough now for us to know we shouldn't cycle on them ? Also, I don't seem to see many filling stations close to motorways with huge Last Petrol Before M6 etc signs anymore. Does this mean, no animals are allowed to drive cars

One for the car and train enthusists on 4:3tv! Gene. The locomotive is a "Deltic" - has loads of coaches on too; you could actually get a seat in those days.
Not good on spotting cars of that era though!

I believe that when the UK motorway network first opened in 1959 and motorway services followed along they were deemed to be quite glamorous!! It was not unknown for people to slip into something far more formal and dine beside (or indeed over!!) the motorways of the UK... I do wish that at least 1 motorway services had been preserved in the 1960's style so we could all take a little trip back to the times when travelling on a motorway (and dining by one) was seen to be both exciting and futuristic!!!
