Incredibly sad news! An amazing innings but a man missed since he gave up commentating will be now be missed even more. A superb commentator for all manner of races on both two and four wheels he was adaptable to both. Many will have their favourite broadcast "Murray" moments and this newly posted video on Youtube captures my favourite which is from the 1979 Motorcycling British Grand Prix at Silverstone where Barry Sheene flicks the V's-up at Kenny Roberts: I was fortunate to meet Murray at a book-signing at the Goodwood Revival Meeting in 2002 when I bought two copies of his book. While queueing for the books to be signed we were repetitively told "Signatures only, do not request dedications" and this was repeated on boards as we walked. When it came to my turn he asked why I had two books so I told him one was for my father and the other for my young son's birthday. He then asked my son's name and how old he would be then, without prompting, wrote a dedication to my son: "To William, best wishes for your 14th birthday, Murray Walker". A really nice gesture that I'll never forget. R.I.P. Murray

Murray was the face of F1 for me. Loved his commentaries throughout the 80s and was really impressed when he teamed up with Martin Brundle for the 98 season ready for the new coverage on ITV. Murray was a fantastic broadcaster that hasn't been surpassed since his retirement.
RIP Murray
