Were plastic toys in cereal popular in the UK back in the 1960s and 1970s? My mother kept everything... Anything toy related was packed up and brought out for the grandchildren, so plastic ships that my brother had from the 1960s his kids played with too. Cartoon characters from the 1970s cereal boxes came in every colour and this is a very small selection from a huge bag. Gee we must have eaten a lot of cereal !

Yes I remember these in Britain when I was a kid in the 60s, I vaguely recollect some that you attached a little plastic weight to with a length of cotton and the weight then dangled off the edge of a table and the figure would then walk along, pulled by the weight. Others were little plastic ships which you put bicarbonate of soda in and it used to react with water and propel them along

They were the first ones that came to my mind when I saw the thread title, there were a whole range of animals that would waddle from side to side as the weight pulled them along. Not just toys though, I also remember 'Noddy' 45rpm records being in packets of Ricicles. We had "Noddy Goes Shopping" and "Noddy at the Seaside" but I think there were a couple of others that we didn't manage to get. Sam.

I think one of them was a bloke pushing a wheelbarrow.

I wish my mum had kept our toys, etc. They were thrown away I presume.
Weren't toys in the cereal itself & not in a plastic bag in the 70's & earlier? I wonder if anyone ever choked on one? I believe food products containing non edible items, eg. Kinder Surprise eggs, are illegal in the US.
I used to get exicted at seeing cards in packets of tea bags Loved the free gifts you'd get with comics as well, despite them being tat. Whenever I walk past the Kinder Eggs at the supermarket I feel like buying one.

Richard Briers' character Tom in the BBC series The Good Life was a draughtsman designing plastic animals used as free gifts in cereal packets.

I used to enjoy the various free goodies you got with the cereal. It was good to finish the box and there would often be something to cut out and make. Carter mentions something about that in one of the Sweeney episodes. Think he makes the quiz wheel where you stick a pencil through the middle as the spindle.
