Forgot to post this.
There is another set of titles based on the 1978 "live action" ones. The titles start at 00:05:25, after Vincent Prices intro. For me, nowhere as near as sinister as the live action ones. The live action ones reminded me of Psycho or Halloween.
On a technical note; these look like an Artwork / Stop Frame animation and Rotoscope combination.
The opening shot of the chair looks as if it's from the live action, and the animated figure has been rotoscoped in (each frame drawn by hand to match the movement of the live action figure) - so the live background is used in a composite image with the animated artwork.
Same way they did the A-Ha "Take on me" video.
To be fair, quite expensive to do.

Yes the animated version isn't as effective. Not seen those Vinny Price intros before, talk about padding, he all but took Ian McKellen's part.

It's likely the Vincent Price intros were added to the start of the US broadcasts; it's also possible the titles were also modified for US TV too. Not a clue why they do this - but it does happen a lot.
I notice there is an absence of the Thames logo too. I'd have thought there would have just been something at the end.
Adding the Vincent Price intros reminded me of Tales of the Unexpected - which would always open with a small intro by Roald Dahl.
