As discussed in the Sweeney restoration section...
Here's the video about the restoration of Starwars. Quite a feat restoring the colours.

It's a bit heavy going and long winded. But it shows the amount of work gone into Restoration.
I have a copy of a Beta version of the said "Dr Dre's tools" which was used to do the colour matching. I haven't got my head round how it works; though you need to put in sample frames and then have other frames as a reference.
The software will then do all the maths and create a reference table for all the tones & colours, which you can then apply to each scene.
The end product on this Starwars restore is very impressive.

Looks interesting, I've got a few hundred photos with the same problem that I need to scan in and try to restore the colour. Looks like there's some long evenings ahead...
Sam.

Photoshop (other software available) is quite good, and has a Curves filter where you can select a suitable algorythm - as each algorythm deals with the image in a slight different way, depending on what you want to do. You can get some very impressive results.
Been reading up on the colorisation of photographs - where they add colour to otherwise B&W images. That is quite complicated and needs a lot of patience & know how.
