Also there's going to be lots of people unplugging the power cords for the hell of it and nicked and damaged cords. I've wondered about that for some time, can the cables be stolen or are there locking mechanisms to stop them being unplugged by some tea-leaf? And if they are locked, what happens in an emergency for unplugging? Sam.

I haven’t seen any built in locks, you’d have to figure a way to secure it. The cords are expensive so would get nicked.

"5 if you don't pay for it." Also there's going to be lots of people unplugging the power cords for the hell of it and nicked and damaged cords. I'd think there would need to be some kind of standardisation for cables and connectors - so any electrical car should be able to plug in to any charger.
They wanted to do this with the OBD2 Car Diagnostics - make it an industry standard protocol which had to be fitted on every car - so anyone could plug in an OBD2 compliant diagnostic tool. Obviously the Car Manufacturers didn't like this as they couldn't charge extortionate amounts to get faults diagnosed by being forced to take the car to a properly equipped dealer.
Car manufacturers fitted OBD2 sockets and software to comply; but to get round it, messed about with the pin connections - so only certain readers (theirs) would work. (They either moved or swapped the polarity of the Data + and -).
I've had 3 cars (Vauxhall, Renault and Ford) all 3 were "OBD2 compliaint" - and for all 3, I had to make adapters for to get my Diagnostics thing to connect and read any codes.
My worry is the electric car business will go the same way with power management & diagnostics.

You've found that too eh Sparky?
OBD, OBD2, Canbus, all these different systems have been a PITA if you wish to change anything from standard. I've had Vauxhall, Rover/MG, and BMW and they're a long way from the old standards of cars when you could add driving lights, HID headlights or change lamps to LED without bringing up a fault indication on the dash. The biggest PITA though is the air bag systems. Both on the BMW and the five Rover/MGs that we've had we seem to be forever getting airbag system alerts on the dash. They can be cleared okay with hooking the OBD2 up to a laptop and using diagnostics but I now have to do that before every MoT.
Back to the electric cars though and I should think that manufacturers will eventually work round to a common cable as phone manufacturers have done with the USB cables, except Apple of course who design incompatibility with the rest of the world into their products. Will Elon Musk go that route I wonder?
Sam.
