He's an ex Celtic player who also played for Scotland (scoring his one and only international goal in a match against England). Also an ex Scotland manager, taking the team to the 1974 World Cup finals in West Germany. However, he quit to take over at Manchester United - “One of my biggest regrets was leaving the Scotland job when I did,” he later said.
RIP The Doc

I think Doc's role in transforming Man United is often overlooked. After Matt Busby retired in 69, following the European cup win in 68, the team went into a very steep decline. Busby made the mistake of hanging around and he undermined the authority of the two following managers, Wilf McGuinness and Frank O Farrell. Also, elements of the 68 team, who were past their best were still there, added to a few iffy signings.
Docherty made the tough decisions needed to have a big clear out, which the two previous managers didn't and created a great new team, the relegation in 74 gave him the authority and excuse that he needed. Unfortunately he upset the hierarchy at Old Trafford, who used the off the field issue of him and the physio 's wife to sack him in 77.
I think they would have won the league within a couple of years if he had continued, but went backwards under his successor Dave Sexton.
