Why do you think this was? I always assumed that it was because the news about the recovery of his body was on the TV in her hospital room just before she died but I’m not sure.

It's a good question LoA Sam had the test-card girl haunting him, Alex had her father/the clown haunting her in A2A series one, and then the younger Gene in series three. The other question to ponder is: why is it that all characters remained in the former body condition before being transported back in time but Gene had both aged and healed from his cause of death/coma? Sam.

I will admit to not really having thought about that exact question before. I wonder if Keats could have been involved in that at all? He wanted her to think that Gene had killed someone/Sam. As for Sam’s question, I took it to mean that Gene he sort of built himself up to what he wanted to be. That’s why when Keats punches him and knocks him to the ground ( ) he does briefly look like his younger self. He’d also forgotten the truth about his death. Maybe when you forget you can change ... ? Although I don’t know how long he’s supposed to have forgotten for, of course. But I think the scene in the office when all that takes place does give some insights into that question. (The final episode of Ashes, about 15 mins before the end, if anyone is interested!).
