Interesting programme on BBC4 tonight that has just finished, it's a 1963 documentary about the hard winter of 62/63.
Cliff Michelmore presents. Always like his calm demeanour on these type of shows.

I just about remember it. Great fun for a 3 year old, several feet of snow, mum was less enthusiastic, having to go outside to bring in coal for the fire

I would have about 3.5 years old, can't remember it.
My dad says they had underground waste water pipes freezing at the flour mill he was managing so it must have been bloomin cold.

I don't remember it as I was only a year old at the time. I do recall there being a bad winter and a white Christmas a few years later as my father's Ford Popular was out of action so he couldn't collect my grandfather meaning he had to make his own way to us by bus for Christmas. I'm guessing that it must have been around '66.

The driving shots were interesting in that documentary, there were people on roads that these days would have shut I would have thought. I also remember seeing lorries with burning rags under them to warm up the diesel in 69/70.

This sounds like the programme they showed back in 2013 to mark the 50th anniversary of this exceptionally cold winter. 1946-47 was even more notorious with huge snowfalls across most of the country in February and March, combined with an economic crisis at the time.

I noticed Ridley Scott in the credits as designer. Perhaps he did the hand drawn weather charts? 😆
