Yes I think there's a tendency to believe that these kind of objections didn't exist at the time, shows like 'It Was Alright In The 70's' make it seem like eveyone was unaware of it & there's an accepted view that 'political correctness' & alternative comedy were to blame for the demise of more 'traditional' humour.
John Bird seems to have had a sideline in doing impressions of Africans. He did a comedy record about Idi Amin & he featured a few times on 'It Was Alright In the 70's' blacked up on tv ads or doing comedy African accents, whilst Indians & Pakistanis seemed to be a preoccupation with Spike Milligan. They would argue that it was satire but people on the receiving end of racism might see it differently.

Another one which got canned very quickly, after complaints, was Curry and Chips, again Spike Milligan as a Pakistani. Also, the Black and White Minstrel show was axed by the BBC in the 70s, as it was attracting complaints.

Hard to know what to make of 'Curry And Chips' as Johnny Speight was politically on the Left ( I read an interview with him that described him as Marxist ) whilst Eric Sykes, a frequent Speight collaborator, was famously a high profile supporter of Rhoedesia's notorious Prime Minister Ian Smith.
I think that's the problem with these iffy sitcoms, one viewer will accept it as a satire poking fun at racial prejudice whilst another will just see their own prejudices confirmed. Speight & Warren Mitchell had this problem with 'Till Death Us Do Part' of course.
Sorry for going off topic!

I've just found out that Guy Garvey went to my school, along with Lol Creme out of 10cc! Guy was after my time, he was there in the 80s, while Lol was before me, he was there in the 60s
