Viz. Now there's a comic. Wish they had that in my dental practice. In fact, they couldn't have picked a better title than "Dental Practice" as I think that's what they do on me. Practice.
Gene.
(and before anyone says otherwise.... Viz was founded in 1979 amazingly)

I remember plenty of comics in my day, which me and my brother read. My brother got The Dandy and the Beano, and fondly remember the funny stories and characters like Corky the Cat and Biffo the Bear and I seem to remember a few others in other comics like Whizzer and Chips and The Beezer. I was talking to my brother about strips I remember but he thought I was daft and making some of them up!
I remember "Leo's thinking cap" which was about some smart boy who when he needed to get himself out of a situation or to help a friend, he pressed the button in the middle of his cap and it buzzed while he thought, and that gave him ideas!
The Bash street kids anyone?
Then there was "Shiner" who always walked around with a permanent black eye!
The "Jocks and the Geordies" probably wouldn't be very politically correct now but the 2 groups were always pranking and warring with each other. The Scottish characters always wore large Tammer Shanters that were as wide as Mexican sombreros in tartan and you couldn't see their eyes!
One mate of mine was a fan of "Winker Watson" the schoolboy, with many strips being a continuation of last weeks strip, serialised. They were quite engrossing I seem to remember with Winker always up to something, or quite often helping out a schoolmate/younger brother, who was in some sort of trouble with a bully or a teacher, or coming up with a scam......
The slightly more "older boys" comics included Battle, Warlord and The Victor, often with historical conflict stories in them, serialised in some cases, often WW2 but sometimes, the First World War (one notable popular favourite of that era was the "Charley Bourne" stories which I have an idea were recently reissued to coincide with the WW1 centenary last year) and occasionally The Korean War. I also bought a few of the "Commando" comic books and enjoyed the stories. Some were brilliant.
Then you had the odd comics that were more in the modern era settings with stories but for older boys too, with "Look out for Lefty" the budding young footballer and his ups and downs (stories even seemed a bit violent sometimes).
I seem to remember one with a private eye in America who had a badly disfigured face after an accident years before, and he mainly wore a mask but carried a gun and brought people to justice. Sometimes he would distract bad guys by taking off his mask and he'd overpower them when they got surprised of his face, a few gun battles and car chases resulted. In his spare time the hero enjoyed the odd powerboat journey or race.
I never was in to the Science Fiction or Superhero American type ones, but mates were.
A mate of mine was well in to Viz in later years, and there was "Zit" Magazine I believe which was a short lived competitor. Although a mate tried it, but it was not as good and "too full of swearing" he thought.
Great times.

Excellent find Steve. I used to read Look In. Me too Del, I can still appreciate it now as the artwork is superb. Some of the artists such as Arthur Ranson are very well regarded.

Agree with earlier comments, the artwork on Look-in was first class.
Other excellent comics were Tiger, Scorcher, The Beano, The Dandy.
Del - just occurs is it worth setting up a poll to see find out the 4:3 view?
Cheers,
Stan
