I used to get Look-in every week and then sell the centre posters at school. I remember the add for it "Lala, lala Look in". The artwork in the comic strips in Look-In is superb. I have this Beatles special by Look-In which was illustrated by Arthur Ranson, a renowned British comic book illustrator:

I loved comics as a kid, my mother used to get me The Dandy, The Beezer and later on in the week, the Beano and the Topper. (Have the D.C. Thompson comics finished completely now ?) Later on I started reading the American ones, loads of us kids in my home town read them, and we used to go around to each others houses in search of swops. Best days of my life. Comics have gone very heavy, and adult now last time I looked at some of them, and of course a lot more expensive.

DC Thomson is still going Bronson, though the only comics they still publish are The Beano and Commando as well as The Broons & Oor Wullie. It's a shame really but a sign of the times I guess.

Thanks Steve. What about Desperate Dan, he appeared in the Dandy didn't he ? If my memory serves me correctly. Did they transfer him to the Beano or is he finished now ? As you say though it is a shame, the poor kids today don't know what their missing out on.

According to Wikipedia The Dandy stopped being printed in 2012 and went digital but that stopped soon after too. Poor old Desperate Dan was rebranded as a bit of dope and was generally a bastardised version of the one we grew up with. Probably for the best that it went out of production, it's us 40-50 somethings that miss it and the others but ultimately no one was buying them anymore. Kids, they know nowt

Good thread this guys. I only used to buy Comics sporadically as older kids / cousins etc gave us hundreds, my favourite was the Beano. The one i used to buy a lot in the late 80's was the Big Comic fortnightly. It had great characters in it called Jack Pot and Mustapha Million who got up to some mischief. I think those two were in other comics originally and they amalgamated to try to keep going as the sales declined. BTW Sam what happened to Spunky the Spider. Did he meet a sticky end ?

I used to get The Beano every week. After that,in the 80s I subscribed to 'Eagle',although the only strip I remember is 'Doomlord' for some reason. The rest is a blank, although I remember enjoying it.I used to get a lot of annuals at Christmas-Dandy,Beano,Shoot!,Whizzer and Chips,Topper-I always got bought the Topper annual.Happy days.
I still get Viz comic every month, without fail.Although it's true....it's not as good as it was. There is ALWAYS something that makes me laugh my socks off,be it letterbocks, top tips, profanisaurus, and there is still some great strips-Drunken Bakers,Scum Mothers Who'd Have Em,and Mr Logic,Biffa Bacon etc are always good for a giggle.Favourite all time strip for me was one that has an ongoing theme but was never a regular-there was one strip called 'Robbing Gypsy Bast**ds,and another one called 'The Roofers Were Bast**ds',absolutely hilarious.
