Currently i'm using Windows 7 which I like because its the most stable Windows they made IMO. Windows 8 was absolutely shocking so I stuck with good old 7. Anyway today I notice the cheeky buggers microsoft have added an update that puts an icon into your task bar inviting you to take a free upgrade to Windows 10. That's an intrusion like U2 punting their album onto peoples I-pod's ..... And i bet it pee's people off. I don't know if i'm going to bother taking the upgrade. 7 works great for me so it could be worse. Saying that Window's track record for O.S's is every other release is a good one. Here's my (unless stated) guide to Window's operating systems Windows 3.11 (from Sam Tyler) Windows 95 (from Sam Tyler) Windows 98 Windows 2000 Windows XP Windows Vista Windows 7 Windows 8 :w***er: Windows 10

I presume the "free upgrade" is a trial and then they will want you to stump up cash for the full version?
A couple of years ago I converted to Apple Macs, would never go back to Windows now!
But funnily enough my phone is a windows phone and I really like it, So much so I will get another one in a few weeks when my contract expires!

Microsoft are losing so many customers to Android and Apple that i suspect this is a new approach to maintain market share. Never had a Mac and after using ipads, phone's I wont be getting one as i don't like their OS. I love Android devices the most, so much in fact that I think I will sell my I-Pad 3 and buy a Samsung Tab. I also hated my windows 8 phone. It was awful, buggy OS ,poor customer service and definitely lagging behind the other 2 market leaders in every department. I wouldn't buy another one.

I totally agree with that guide but would have added Windows 3.11 and Windows 96 at the start.
I too have received the taskbar notification but don't know if I can be arsed to upgrade on my current PC. I will be getting a new one at some point so will try it then but upgrades always seem buggy and a bloody nuisance.
I have used a Mac in the past and also have an iPad but give me a PC and an Android tablet over them any time, I just find Apple stuff so user unfriendly.
Sam.

I remember Windows 95 vaguely. It was on my first internet enabled PC (pentium 1 processor,2 gb hard drive and floppy port ) Before that i hadn't bothered with PC's since 1986 when I had an Amstrad CPC464 with a tape drive I only wanted computers at this time for games , so consoles were the better way to go. I can't remember whether windows 95 was any good TBH Edited the top list and credited you Sam.

Not a massive computer person but personally liked XP the best out of all the operating systems I've used.

It was user friendly and did everything you needed it to which is why they didn't better it for 5 or 6 years which is an age in software development. Problem with XP was it used to need rebuilding every 18 months or so after becoming unstable. Windows 7 is much better in that respect.

XP was good but been using 7 for over four years and it has been so reliable. Had Vista on this PC before that and it was pants. It used to take 2 - 3 minutes to boot up, now the upgrade to 7 and SSDs instead of HDDs means boot takes about 20 seconds.

That has been my experience with Windows 7 ,Sam. 7 has been on my machines since it came out and has only needed one rebuild in all that time, so it performs far better in that respect than XP , it has better features too. I hated Vista, it was buggy and didn't like older software it was always causing me agg so i went back to XP for a couple of years. Windows 8 oh my god its F**king dreadful I look after my mums PC which has this and there's so much wrong with it. I stuck with 7 after this experience.

I've been very pleased with its reliability. I updated my main PC back in January 2011 with the SSDs, additional RAM, Windows 7, and offloaded all of my photos, music, e-mail accounts, and documents onto a number of network storage units.
This has meant that the PC just has the software packages to run rather than store as well. By putting Windows 7, more RAM, and SSDs in my laptop too means that is up to speed too and I just have to access the network drives for my documents.
Not tried Windows 8 but you're not the first I've heard complain about it.
