Does anybody remember this ATV kids' show from 1977? It was called A Bunch of Fives and was a precursor to Grange Hill. The series was about Fifth-formers who were trying to start a school newspaper at a comprehensive. It seems a bit familiar to me but probably largely forgotten nowadays.

I have vague memory of this series and must check this one out. Anything with actors from Anna Scher's drama school back then was always worth watching. At first glance it reminds me a bit of the Tyne Tees series "The Paper Lads" about a gang of paper boys working for a retired policeman turned newsagent played by Glynn Edwards who would get them to tip him off about stories/suspicious activity they spotted during their rounds. It had a cracking theme tune from Renaissance around the time of their big hit "Northern Lights".

I've seen it on Network's site but not watched it before Vi, would only have been 6 when it was first shown. Will give that a watch later.
Like the shop near the start with the lighters randomly left on the counter 'I'll just see if I've got any copies of that magazine whilst you nick one of them'. Can't think why he'd suspect Jamie Foreman of theft

Was it not a forerunner (or Steven Moffats inspiration) for "Press Gang" which Central TV (Films) made in the late 1980s. If this is 1977, it's before Grange Hill. I think that came along in 1978.

Yes Sparks, the show was first transmitted on ITV in May 1977; Grange Hill first aired in February 1978 on the BBC. Vi

I vaguely remember something about a kids newspaper from the late 60s, Adventure Weekly I think it was called.
On Follyfoot again, there were a couple of well known faces in it, Arthur English and Desmond Llewellyn (Q from Bond)

I used to love this programme...
Incidentally, this is Part 1 of a 2 part special they did in 1980; looking round "Sammies" (or Samuelsons) - the film equipment hire place. Sammies were the British outlet for Panavision equipment, also they worked on the development of the Panaglide (steady cam) and had fingers in just about every single pie in the Film Industry for years on end.
The MD's didn't hide in their offices, they got out on jobs and talked to those on the front line.
Their gear was second to none - and always pristine and maintained. You never got dodgy or crap kit from them. Also - they were good if you needed bespoke stuff making up (lense/camera mounts and all that) If we needed extra gear - it came from Sammies - and always looked brand new. "Sammies" was all sold up and merged into "Lee Lighting" and became what's now "Panalux". Still a great service and gear - but not a patch on Sammies.
Chris Kelly (the Presenter) - a big Film and Film Making anorak fronted 'Food & Drink'; and then became a script writer and a pretty well renowned Producer. He was behind quite a few of a major ITV dramas throughout the 90s to present.

Thanks for sharing this one. I watched both parts and found them fascinating, although I'd never heard pf Samuelson's before this. A real film empire built up from next to nothing. Chris Kelly was always an excellent presenter who never talked down to kids.

Chris Kelly was always an excellent presenter who never talked down to kids. I forgot about the wide range of subjects Clapperboard covered - they went behind the scenes on a lot of Big films. There was one behind the scene of Starwars and whatever Bond was in production in 1976.
Samuelsons was one heck of an empire - I never realized that they also owned Theatre Projects - whom at the time were responsible for Lighting / Staging of most of the huge concerts - Queen, U2 and some contribution to Pink Floyd. Theatre Projects also had an installations department who kitted out Theatres, Schools.
The Sammies empire was built from hiring one camera.
Chris Kelly didn't present the series when it first started in 1972 - I think he took over sometime in the mid 70s - pretty much made it his own show.

He's credited with writing two episodes of Minder in the 90s according to IMDB, unless it's a different Chris Kelly they have mistakenly cross referenced.
