Really sad news. Me and my Dad also met Willie Thorne at The Crucible in 1985 and he was indeed a great character and easy to talk to. My wife also met him at an event to raise money for the air ambulance a couple of years ago and had her photo taken with him. She too said he was a nice chap to talk to. Stark contrast to Alex Higgins, who I met in the early 90s, completely destroying the admiration I had for him since the 70s. I believe Willie was known as Mr Maximum during his heyday because of his break building ability. Sad that he never progressed further than the quarter finals in the World Championships. RIP Willie. Hi Gene I didn't know you were a snooker fan like my good self. Willie was the first player I watched on my first trip to The Crucible in 1992. Never met him but loved to watch him and a super cue action to boot. Alex Higgins. Now there is an enigma. Never met him but sure that had I done so I wouldn't have liked him. Read a few books on him, the Bill Borrows one is good. Alex was certainly the victim of a mother who spoilt him. As an adult he still seemed to think the world revolved him. In saying that I have a shirt adorning the 'great' man. Love to wear it and it still love watching the old footage of the git!
