Close call! I have a lot of family connections and many happy memories associated with Dorset so that tips the balance for me. I think we've veered too far from the adverts now so... Sam.

Very interesting, thanks Sparky! I can see why that died though, imagine that now with everyone having so much contact and access to things ... it would never work having one region behind another on a series!! I am vaguely aware of the name Westward Television (as that would have been my region) and possibly links with Gus Honeybun?? I really, really hope that makes some sense. If not I blame it on you lot, my dear constructs I think the regional thing would still work these days; but the technology also there now - so networked shows would all be in line across the country. The theory behind it was that each 'region' could make programmes that reflected it's area and it's people; given how diverse the areas were. Also - each area could raise it's own money through advertising.
I have seen some local programmes from other regions - and found them pretty interesting. Both Southern and Westward made some great documentaries.
Westward TV went off air in 1981, replaced by "TSW" (Television South West) - and they ended up getting replaced by Westcountry.
Gus Honeybun was on for years - is Ian Stirling still doing the news?

Not usually a seen 'face' but Granada's continuity announcer Charles Foster narrated many regional adverts shown by Granada up to the '90's.
IIRC Jim Pope another of Granada's announcers may have done some ad's too and Charles and Jim both used to narrate/announce Granada programmes like World in Action and University Challenge.

Yes, that's right. A lot of the ITV regions used announcers to voice their local ads. I have found a pile of local ads which I need to sort through. On YTV, Redvers Kyle voiced many of their local ads, on ATV, announcer Mike Prince or Su Evans did a few of them.
I loved the local ads, they usually consisted of a 35mm slide, a photo and some captions knocked up in Letraset. Also sometimes accompanied (if budget was available) by some shocking library or lift music.
Some local ads went big budget and had the shop owner doing his (or her) bit to the camera - usually a sofa or carpet shop.
I have uncovered a pile of bits from Granada - around 1977/78.
Will make a thread for the other finds.

Mentioned this before but Judy Matheson from 'Selected Target' was a TVS announcer in the 80's. Another Granada announcer Graham James was also an actor, saw him recently in an episode of 'Manhunt'. Both James & Matheson were in Hammer films in the 70's. Disgraced 'It's A Knockout' presenter Stuart Hall was another Granada face.

In my area we had Anglia television and had a number of On Screen announcers, announcing the next programme, a a mixture of male and womean presenters, although the one that springs to mind was a jolly chap called Michael Speke.
He also voiced the some of the on screen local business adverts too which were garden centres, home appliance showrooms, car dealers, and DIY Centres etc, and the announcers would also announce 5 minute slots with the weather bulletins "Now here's the weather with David Brookes/Michael Hunt etc" or even Pop videos for an up and coming band.

For the ITV50 feature length programme for "ATV" and "Central" back in 2005, we interviewed a handful of well known announcers from ATV and Central.
We discovered that many of the more senior announcers were all equity members, and had either studied at RADA, LAMDA, Guildhall and were all actors. We were told that these days, "TV Presenters" if you like - go on courses in ettiquette, presentation and all that.
The most memorable from our interviews was a visit to Tarporley in Cheshire, to interview Diana Mather who had worked at ATV from 1979 to around 1982. She was the most welcoming person we had ever met - and had laid on Silver Service Tea, complete with Cream Scones and a variety of freshly baked cake.

I have some Anglia bits which I will put up in another thread. I have managed to recognise Micheal Speke - prior to Anglia, he was at ATV.
