Here he is advertising patio awnings He reminds me of the actor Clifford Kershaw-

Oh yes I remember him. John Stalker was indeed the Manchester force top bod in the 80s.

Good grief, that must have taken you an absolute age to compile! So strange seeing people in adverts like that for some reason - even though you normally expect to see them on the TV! How infuriating it is when you can't place them, though!

Yes, Arthur, he was a familiar face in the Midlands too during the 1990s. I remember him doing a show called Crimestalker, a sort of regional 'Crimewatch' made by Central TV. I think the former ITN newsreader Sue Carpenter was his co-presenter. Vi

How infuriating it is when you can't place them, though! Didn't take too long really, as I'm helping a mate trawl through myriads of old video tapes. So while I'm going through them, marking each digital file of the video with a timecode mark and notes - you can just grab a still.
We were going to forget about the adverts, though so many faces from TV shows popped up, I though it'd mad to miss looking at them.
Nothing really amazing to write home about popped up yet. Though we haven't reached the 1973-1979 era yet.

One of the most fascinating things for me, is playing "guess the ITV region"- and looking at how different the ITV regions were in the 70s and 80s - in the way they presented things.
I was brought up watching ATV / Central, a bit of Yorkshire Television in B&W, and a bit of Channel TV when we visited family. I have some unknown regions, so will post them up to see if anyone can fathom them out.
I quite liked seeing both Thames and LWT style too. I never realised that Thames once did a formal 'hand over' for LWT on a Friday evening. I was of the assumption Thames were on air until closedown on Friday night, and then LWT would go on air on a Saturday & Sunday.
Other areas, like Border Television and Southern Television seemed a bit 'basic' in their ways in comparison.

I really like the differing identities from back then. ITV really lost something after they got rid of the concept.

ITV lost it's identity when they got rid of the regional channels & the onscreen announcers now seem like a distant memory, everything is so bland & impersonal now.

He was sent to Northern Ireland to investigate shootings by the security forces, The Stalker enquiry which was scuppered by false allegations about John Stalker. I reckon he was a top bloke. Died in 2019.
