have more ramblings to present! Please don't say "get go" again Seriously though, I admire you & DE for being able to write these in depth synopses. Being bionic, I only work in zero's and ones and as a result, I either like or dislike, there is no middle ground

With regards to Maya, I have this evening been reading a scene we never got for episode 1 and have more ramblings to present! I will however definitely not be doing that until tomorrow. That sounds interesting, I wonder why it was cut? Sam.

Right. Using this computer is like being in 1973 at the moment It's taken me half an hour to get three photographs from my phone to a place where I can upload them on here . I'm hoping that they're going to be legible to you. The first episode, as you will see below, was supposed to start quite differently and actually give us a bit more context to Sam and Maya's failing relationship. I've always thought it was almost irrelevant as the plot goes because, as (our) Sam said, her actions lead directly to Sam being in the accident, we're never actually told how it is that she's fine and at his bedside in 2006 and then she just sort of disappears. She is mentioned again when her mum appears but, to be honest, I don't think there'd be much lost from the plot if she were completely omitted. I never get any kind of emotion from their relationship to be honest. It's hinted at that they're in a relationship which is going awry from one line in the office (Sam's standing her down from the case because "it's not productive, given our personal problems". From memory now I'm not even sure if he says "personal". But that's really all we get given. Now, you may not agree with me but I think this opening portrays Sam quite differently. I think in the version that was broadcast, Sam's main trait as far as policing goes is that he's just and by-the-book and about doing things properly - whiter than white. In this version, Sam is much more of a workaholic/married to the job than I ever feel like he is in our version. Which does compare more directly with Gene, though obviously in a completely different way. I don't ever feel like, prior to reading this scene, I felt that Sam and Maya's relationship (whatever I could possibly make of that almost non-existent entity!) was failing because Sam was obsessed with policing/obsessed with work. This introduction is more about a character than about a time-shifting police drama. I'm not sure I like it and, to be honest, I don't think it puts Sam in a very likable light. Never before have I felt sorry for Maya, but actually this scene gave her at least some kind of a story. I do question why they left her in it at all if they decided not to broadcast this introduction. There must have been a thought process and maybe someone like Sparky could shed some light for us on the kinds of things that make the decisions in filming? It would be a very disjointed edit if it were merely for time. It also portrays Sam as someone who is bothered about neatness and verging on OCD (I hate that term but I can't really think of a suitable word at this moment - but I'm sure Steve can so feel free to interject) with the whole lining up of the equipment of the desk. Wait. I haven't shown you that bit:
Scene 9: Rapid montage - DAT machine loaded, CCTV aligned, lap-top booted. SAM sets out pens and pad. Squares them with the edge of his desk. Tightens his tie knot. This isn't an impression I believe that we get of Sam in what was shown on TV, and nor is the seemingly "too professional to waste time on emotion" image; rather, I thought that that was one of Sam's traits from 2006 that he was trying to instill into the team in 1973 - empathy, emotion and humanity? I know that Gene and the others work on gut instinct but that's not the same thing. I spoke to my other half about this last night after I had read it through (the poor, long-suffering soul puts up with discussions about these programmes more than a normal person would probably manage) and he said he doesn't overly like Sam's character in the series; if they'd left this scene in, he'd have liked him even less. I think he has a point!

Thanks for posting the shooting script up Bolly, it makes very interesting reading. Basically it could have been showing Sam to be a person that I think most of us have already experienced and despised as a result. It was a wise decision of the scriptwriters to leave that out since the accident could have been seen as 'that' Sam's just desserts for being an obnoxious arse to Maya and put a completely different perspective on the series from the outset (or the get-go! ) We still don't get any indication of Maya's kidnapping or her re-emergence back into 2006 life which makes me wonder how many other script variants there may have been. Sam.

No, it is a strange one that Maya just re-appears with no explanation whatsoever. But I've never seen anything with any further info on that and, having witnessed Matthew & Ashley's responses to various questions over the years, I bet they wouldn't have an answer, or if they had on, they'd have forgotten it by now! Yes, I'm glad Sam wasn't like that; the 70s crew are so unlikable to begin with (yes, even Gene ) that if we didn't empathise with Sam, we'd probably have not had so much enjoyment, or maybe not even stuck with it! Unlikely, but you never know. I first read your response to this immediately after waking up this morning and had absolutely no idea what you were on about so I'm glad I re-read it whilst awake before responding.
