They recently demolished my towns 20s art deco cinema. It was a bingo hall and they sold it to Lidl's. Such a shame. FFS Del!
Sad that!

Sort of near to where I'm at and do tend to pass it every few days or so but sadly the ABC (later Cineworld... ) cinema in Hammersmith is now no more.
We've probably seen it and passed it on Sweeney/London meets when we've been in Hammersmith and on the way to Ravenscourt Park. It bit the dust in 2017 as part of a all-singing dancing Hammersmith Town Hall redevelopment - supposedly incorporating a new cinema, around there... however for the last year or so not much seems to have been happening with this and with everything that's been happening with Covid and it's knock on effects on the economy sadly can't see much doing there for a while either.
Loosely it's been like this for a couple of years albeit with the weeds growing higher and higher!
I did go there once in 2015 to see a re-showing of The Terminator as I'd never seen that on the big screen before. Sadly got the impression it was on it's last legs and not sure what the future holds for cinema now with streaming and Covid possibly a big threat to it... even for the multiplex's.
Another one I knew of but never used was High Street Ken's Odeon with like the ABC/Cineworld in Hammersmith succumbed to redevelopment in 2015.
Again only as the article facade seems to remain construction work on this seems to have ground to a halt too!

Nice post DE! But what a shame! Twas a lovely building! Can’t believe how it maddens me! It’s survived all this time and through the 2nd world war, yet no one can find the money to save it! Wish I never started this thread! It’s making me realise just how many of these nice cinemas are disappearing! It’s BS that they can’t find lottery money or something from somewhere to keep um going!

Nearest me is the Regent in Blackpool. It opened in 1921, became a bingo hall in the 70's, a snooker hall in 2007, then a bar. In 2016 the cinema was re-opened & shows classic films. My brother knows the person who runs it, I think he told me that for £50 ( may have been more ) he will screen a dvd or blu ray of your choice.
Other independent cinemas I've been to in the past in the North West are The Dukes in Lancaster & The Cornerhouse in Manchester. Further afield I went to Cine Dore in Madrid over 20 years ago, a beautiful old cinema, I was by myself so I went a few days on the trot as it was only about 50p a ticket, there was a season of Carol Reed films on at the time, it was funny watching these old British films with a Spanish audience.

Sadly the cinema that Annie and I used to go to at Staines before we got hitched was demolished years ago. A large, brick built cinema with originally just one screen, it was bought out by ABC cinemas and converted into three screens. It can be seen in this link >>> HERE <<< and interesting to me that the picture was taken only four months after Annie and I had started dating and when we'd just about finished our final year at school. Although briefly and from a distance, the back of the cinema did appear in The Sweeney episode The Placer (shown here just in front of the Bedford van) Sam. That’s a pretty cool story Sam of you and Annie! and what a great Way to get a reminder of happy days, every time you watch that particular Sweeney episode!! I will look out for it the next time I watch the Placer!

Over 20 years ago when I was in the Lake-district with a girlfriend we had a trip to the Royalty cinema in Bowness - I remember watching American Pie there...

And here's a picture of a Dunoon's Cinema taken in 2014 - my Mrs won't be happy she's in the snap, she's lost about 4 stone since this was taken! Recommend a trip here if you are in this part of Scotland - don't be put off by the corrugated look of the cinema... the rest of the surrounding area was lovely!

The old cinema I regularly went to in Luton in the late 80's and 90's, was the ABC in Luton now in the pedestrianised area a short walk from the Town Hall. Opened in October 1938, it became a 3-screen in 1971, renamed the Canon in 1986, and closed in November 2000, a victim of the nearby Galaxy multiplex (where I sometimes go nowadays). It's future is uncertain.
Here's some further info;
According to a 2015 report, there were plans to develop it into a new church but by 2017, there were plans to demolish it and sell the land for redevelopment, but as of (when I was last there and saw it) it's sat boarded up and derelict.

There was a cinema in Radcliffe too, near the bus station which closed sometime in the 60s. Another one I remember going to was the Temple on Cheetham Hill Road, which was a bit of a flea pit. An interesting one is the Essoldo in Stretford, which is an unusual art deco design

We went to that cinema on our third date and saw the original version of "Gone In 60 Seconds" back in March '78. In fact we sat through the film twice to see the scenes that we, er, 'missed' in the first showing. Sam.
