I think he collapsed after drinking silly amounts of alcohol and trying to arm wrestle sailers in a pub! He regularly challenged people to tests of physical strength. He also regularly started fights. It took a long time for him to pass out. Most of his colleagues could tell when the red mist was going to descend and got away fast. If you weren't into heavy drinking and boorish behaviour then this is what any same person would have done
He had a friend/minder called Reg who often had to bail him out of these incidents. Reg was ridiculously hard.
After a long association, Reed pushed Reg off a restaurant balustrade during a binge which broke Reg's back and ruined his career - well that's Reg's version. Reg remained very bitter about the incident, as you would be, and unsuccessfully sued Reed. The judge stated felt there was insufficient reliable evidence as the night was soaked in alcohol

As you stated earlier Lord Em, a deeply unpleasant man. I've no time for his type.

Well, deeply unpleasant after a few drinks. He could also be very charming and pleasant when sober, or even up to a certain level of intoxication.

True, but I can't get on with the type that so easily becomes unpleasant, being slightly or majorly p***ed is no excuse. It exposes a massive personality defect.

The thing is if he hadn't boozed he'd no doubt be remembered for his acting, which sounds obvious but what person, regardless of who they are, would want to be remembered as a drunk? Look at Ian Hendry, an excellent actor but whenever he is discussed, like Reed & so many other actors, it inevitably ends up with us talking about how badly he aged & how much booze he put away.
There's a clip of Reed on David Letterman & at one point he tells Letterman sharply 'you were told not to discuss drinking'. He made a rod for his own back but I'm sure he'd rather have been talking, like any other actor, about his acting. Peter O'Toole & Richard Harris gave up drinking so they were able to talk about it in the past tense, as Reed never gave up drinking he was never able to reflect on it, much like his pal Alex Higgins it dogged him until his death.
Reed was capable of powerful performances, I don't think I've seen any interviewer discussing them with him, you never hear them say 'you were very good in so & so', it's always straight to the drunken antics. The sad thing is that most of us are interested in hearing about how much someone drinks, people used to like hearing an actor like Michael Caine say 'I drank 2 bottles of vodka a day'.

No reason to get unpleasant while you're drunk, that's a choice.

He was 49 in that clip. I don't think he had much time for America.

Talking about arm wrestling though, I was known to arm wrestle myself the odd time years ago when I use to frequent my local pubs whilst intoxicated! I wasn’t bad at the time, I think beer just does this to to ya
