Great work by your dad there Alex I can see by the purlins that your dad has his layout in the regular place - confined to the loft. I can see he has a number of 70's cars there, an Allegro estate, Cortina, Marina, Volvo estate, Austin / Morris 1100 /1300, Jensen Interceptor etc. He's put a lot of detail in to it. When it was our twins' 3rd birthday I made a small layout for our son which was based on Thomas the Tank Engine, James the Red engine, Percy, Duck, and Gordon. I made a double oval with tunnel, sidings, engine shed, water tower, houses etc and he loved it. We also bought him a cabin bed so that he could sleep up top and the layout was fixed at waist height underneath. I must admit that I enjoyed doing the layout and all the scenic work but after that the novelty wore off very quickly with the trains just going round and around. When he later started with Thomas and Duck having races and commentating in a Murray Walker fashion we knew it was time for a Scalextric set, or three. That was 25 years ago and Scalextric has been a big part of my life since. Sam.

Thanks, Sam. He's not confined to the loft for any reason other than space. I grew up in a small 1960s bungalow and when both my brother and I lived at home, you can imagine, there wasn't a lot of spare room! Initially it was for my brother and it started out as just an oval in the living room which, when he was about 16 I would guess moved upstairs to the loft on a wallpaper table! When dad started all the detailing that became a bit too precarious - had it collapsed it would have been awful! It's now the entire way around the loft, although all the detail is confined to one end where you can actually reach it. I dread to think how many hours have gone into it. Each bit has a name (the station, the ruins, the little cottages etc) but the bit I enjoy the most is when he's running steam and when he's running diesels the cars get swapped out to be the right time period! As you say, though, it's just a circuit (although on quite a large scale!) and I think the actual movement of the trains is the least of his interest. That sounds lovely :) I loved Thomas the Tank, too . I had trains but never a track or anything ... I think Barbie took over before that was likely!

I had the misfortune of seeing a clip of the current "Thomas...." and was shocked. The whole thing is voiced by Amercian voices, in CGI - half of the original characters are gone - and the US idea of making their kids shows Patronising, Twee, Sickly, PC and Finger wagging - totally ruined it.
I loved the original UK produced series before Britt Allcroft sold the rights; the idea that the series was made using sections "G" Gauge (Garden Scale) model railway made it work. Again, there were all these little details added here and there to make it authentic. Because it was simple, it worked.

I remember discovering that (after I'd stopped watching) they added in girl trains . I can safely say that watching it as a 2/3/4/5 year old girl, I never once thought "oh no, there are no girl trains so I cannot relate to this" or "evidently my purpose in life is just to be one of the carriages". . It's just painful, all the ultra-PC cr*p.

There always was a girl train in it Daisy looks like a carriage but is in fact a Railcar. She is that rare thing in the series, a freindly Diesel .

No. I'm now convinced Daisy was just a train in drag. Although she does have blue eye make-up, which might make her appealing to a certain member of our congregation
