Just watching Diamonds on ITV4, one of the poorest of Connery's time I feel. It's probably the worst film of his Bond tenure but it had a lot to live up to. This film is strange in that it looks remarkably 70s to me so early in the decade. Must say despite its faults I like this film .

The effects are a bit rubbish, plot iffy and Charles Gray isn't as good as Donald Plesance as Blofeld. Lana Turner is rather delightful mind!

I've been aware of this movie for many years but never had the opportunity to see it. I don't recall it being on the box at all over the years. Casino Royale (1967)was on TPTV over Christmas I think so I recorded it and kept it back for a while. Having watched it last night I can see why it doesn't get highly rated. Alas for a spoof film its dreadfully unfunny. The pretty impressive cast unfortunately can't do much to lift the film. Casino Royale has issues where It's convoluted in several places, it really limps along. It wasn't a question of budget from what I read on IMDB. There's lavish sets throughout and I can see that a pretty penny was spent on it, but sadly it really doesn't have much pace or laughs. Obviously you don't always agree with the critical reception of films but on this occasion it's reputation is fair. I did expect to like it more. I did read with interest that two of the cast walked whilst filming it. Peter Sellers fell out with Orson Wells and Woody Allen supposedly walked off the set and flew to New York still in his costume.

I thankfully missed it Lots of the 60s kitsch on offer in Casino Royale seems to be the base for the Mike Myers Austin Powers films from the late 90s. They literally are a remake of this and were far more successful. Those films do divide opinion too.

The best part of it was the great Burt Bacharach theme tune.

I read in a biography on Peter Sellers that he was tremendously difficult during the filming of 'Casino Royale'. For one thing he absolutely refused to work with Orson Welles, feeling intimated by Welles reputation. The scenes where they were supposed to converse had to be filmed separately and spliced together. The biographer said that Peter eventually sodded off from the production before he had filmed all of his scenes with the of the whole film needing to be restructured because of his early departure. The finished production is not the one that was intended apparently.
I was wondering who directed the film, and it's just dawned on me that it might have been John Huston.
It always seems a typically sixtyish film to me, especially with that great Bacharach theme tune.
Charles.

He directed the scenes at James Bond's house and the castle in Scotland. The other directors were Val Guest, Ken Hughes, Joseph McGrath, Robert Parish & Richard Talmadge. Gene.
