I wonder about the 'wartime spirit' of WW2, whilst we think of the nation pulling together against a common enemy & enduring hardships, doubtless there were a lot of people outside London & other cities that resented rationing & all the other measures, rather like those today who think of themselves as 'low risk' might resent the elderly.
Those Brits during the war who exploited the situation for profit are portrayed ( famously Walker in Dad's Army ) in tv/film as jack the lads or rough diamonds & called 'spivs', but I wonder what the public really thought of them? I read that 1 year into rationing, 2,300 people had been prosecuted and severely penalised for fraud and dishonesty.

There was a black market during WW2, where you could get hold of stuff 'off ration' via Spivs.
Though, back then there was also this community spirit, where you looked after your neighbours and pulled together.
One positive side of this Corona virus business, is that local shops, butchers, grocers (where there still are some) are getting quite a bit of custom as customers try to steer away from the big supermarkets.
Hope people don't forget these local shops and suppliers after the whole Corona thing has blown over.

Yes, the locals are doing a roaring trade, farm shops etc.
Plus the butcher type ones will take orders so you reserve stuff.

It is beyond my comprehension why people are so self-centred. I went into Tesco tonight after taking food round to Annie's father. I went in on the off-chance that I may be able to get some fresh meat and veg but there was no chance of that. There was a soap-dodger there with a trolley full of about fifteen bottles of lemonade when he should have been buying body wash. Anyway, while I was there two of the shelf stacking staff bought out a pallet of bog rolls and immediately people flocked round and started tearing at the outer plastic wrap trying to take three or four packets of nine bog rolls. Thankfully the staff stopped them and proceeded to issue one pack per customer. At first I wasn't going to bother but then remembered that when I went to the khazi at Annie's dad's I'd noticed there was only two rolls left so gratefully received a pack when the assistant offered it to me. After leaving Tesco I took the pack straight round to him. Perhaps the solution is to lock up the trolleys and make people use baskets, with trolleys being available only for those that are elderly or infirm? Sam. It's a bit nuts at the moment Sam perhaps rationing some of these items may be the way to go but... some.will still be like locusts at the moment.

Here's an idea, if you ever watched the relevant episode of Porridge.Limit them to two sheets each.

That reminds me of when I went to a town in Mexico years ago, there was a public toilet with a man sat outside at a table who gave you 1 sheet of toilet paper as you went in.
Look at this drone smudge of a 6am queue at Tesco in New Malden, absolutely rickydoodolous-

Total bell ends.
I went to our local shop this afternoon. No rush to get there. No camping out 2 hours before they open. Not a soul in when I entered, shelves fully stocked. Came out with 2 bags of essentials. Total - 5 minutes. Job done. No panic.
