Absolutely super series this. IMHO when it is on I don't see anything on terrestrial TV over recent years to top it. Great stories with flawed characters. As for Sarah Lancashire, just brilliant.

Completely agree - I think I’ve watched this 3 times now - I recommend it to family members and then end up watching it again with them!

Just how horrible is the storyline? I know I've mentioned on here before that I stopped watching it, not because I didn't find it compelling, because I did! but it was really quite ... scary? I mean, I literally live on crime drama - both TV and books, but my parents tried really hard to stop me watching this one and I don't know if I should just stop being a wuss. What do you think, guys?

There are a couple of gruesome and graphic scenes Alex, and the plots are definitely more gritty than LOM or A2A. Saying that I did watch it with my 19 year old daughter - so it’s a tough one to call. If you started it before then didn’t carry on then maybe leave it - or watch 1 more episode and judge it from that?

The bit that made me switch off (to be honest it was so long ago, I’d have to start from scratch anyway!) was when the image of a girl who I think had maybe killed herself? Was sort of inverted like a negative but flashed up on the screen as though in the main character’s memory. Does that mean anything to you? I’m fairly sure that’s what it was. But it was a “oh my god this is going to give me nightmares” type moment. Mind you, the most recent series of Unforgotten has just appeared on Netflix and I watched the whole lot and when my husband left for work at 4am the other morning I had to get up, check the front door was locked and check the whole house for a serial killer before I could go back to sleep so maybe it won’t make any difference.

Yes that image is quite gruesome and pops up now and then - you’re right it is the main character’s daughter who committed suicide. It’s hard because if you do watch it and it becomes a bit scary then it’s hard to ‘un-see’ these things isn’t it?

It’s hard because if you do watch it and it becomes a bit scary then it’s hard to ‘un-see’ these things isn’t it? Yes, exactly. But I should probably just get on with it shouldn't I? Darker side to this. When I was 16, and we had just started doing our GCSEs - I think we had done 2 exams, a girl in my year hanged herself. She wasn't a friend of mine; she was a popular girl who, if she bothered to acknowledge my presence at all, it was to laugh at me so ... everyone around me couldn't really understand my reaction. I got my parents to help me buy some flowers and drive me across the city to where she was buried. I don't know why, I basically felt like I was saying I didn't hold it against her for treating me the way she did because, clearly, she had a lot going on. I've never found out why she did what she did, but I think about her from time to time. At the end of the day, for anyone at that age to take their own lives is a tragic state of affaird. But for months afterwards I had nightmares about her; I'd see her face in the dark and had to keep the light on some nights, and that little flashback in Happy Valley was just a bit too familiar. Sorry, I did just say I am good at waffling! I'll let you know how I get on if I do give it another try.

That’s so sad Alex and something that will never leave you. It affects so many lives and in HV you see the consequences of her death for lots of people so might be a bit close to home for you. Good luck though if you go for it x

If you can handle the grissly content - and some of it is very visceral - then it's an amazing series. One of my all time favourites.
If it reminds you of a traumatic incident Alex then I would definitely give it a swerve

So sorry to hear of this Alex, so difficult to comprehend at that age and sad to say a similar experience I had myself whilst still at school. Not a close friend but we were on good terms, he hanged himself in his garden after the trauma of losing his father and himself getting severely burnt in a house fire. They were particularly poor too so the house was very run down. I still pass it every time I visit my parents and without fail it runs through my mind what he must have been going through. Despite being run down then though the house has now been fully renovated with manicured lawns and is probably worth a small fortune. It doesn't stop those reminders but it does put so many other worries and concerns into perspective! Sorry to break from the topic, let's get back to it before I turn the thread into miserable valley. Sam.
