Noticed this on the BBC News site of photos of Hackney and surrounding areas mainly from the 70s but a bit of 60s and 80s thrown in too.

Simpler times but working conditions for many were basic & harsh compared to today, that smudge of the 2 women assembling toy cars looks like it could've been taken in a developing country. There's an edition of World In Action on working conditions in the 70s, one of the jobs featured was checking drawing pins for irregularities, a roomful of men were sat with a box of them & they literally had to inspect each one individually.
The poster for Mars Bars wouldn't pass today, using an apple to go with their 'a Mars a day' slogan.

The photo with the Mars Bar ad with an apple shape in the background also features a real life Harold Steptoe by the looks of it, I'm sure there were a few "Rag and Bone man" type self employed characters still around then, which Steptoe and son reflected. Great snapshots and thanks DE.

Great photos Dirty. I love those type. I collect a lot of digital images of Liverpool from the old days.
The changes in London life since the 70s are truly staggering. Forty odd years doesn't seem a huge amount time really. It's like looking at life on a different planet, compared to todays London. Saying that I went into Liverpool city centre yesterday and I was struck again at how much that's changed since the nineties. I don't like a lot of it at all. Developers are building apartment blocks absolutely all over the place.

The family living in Rachel Point, this block was demolished in 2003 with the "indestructible" Toyota Hilux from Top Gear strapped to the top. |

Great pics! Can't see that Is your man getting enough making it through the censors these days!
Also that picture of the inside of a flat, you can't tell where the floor ends and the walls start!
I had similar wall paper in a bungalow.
