Well Operation Susie featured railyards but was filmed in late 80. Thanks 3L. I'll have a look at that episode again. Can't be certain if it was a 52 going past- though they had been withdrawn by 1980.
Not sure if I am thinking f the same episode as you Sparky, but just had a look at Operation Susie on line and it was the one I remember being set in a railyard at the end, Bodie and Doyle are being shot in a stationary carriage whilst protecting a girl in the last scenes of the episode.

I had to get up really early for work one morning, and happened to catch an episode of the Professionals on ITV4, typically for me, 1/2 way through. Bodie and Doyle were in a sequence dashing about a Rail Yard/Depot - darting between coaches and Locos.
I never did find what episode it was, and where the yard was.
Though it looked like there were a pile of EMU/DMU stabled to one side, a couple of 31s and 47s stabled up, and I think a 52 darts past in the background. So I'd guess, the episode was shot in 1976/77 (the 52s were withdrawn in 1977) - and only ran from Paddington out towards the West Country.
Would the depot be Southall?
I think the 'Professionals' episode you're thinking of with the coaches was filmed in Stratford carriage sidings in East London, the train going past slowly in the background was hauled by a Class 37. There are no Westerns in the series though, filming of the first series didn't start until June '77, four months after the last four Westerns were withdrawn. The Western / Class 52 dashing past in the background was in 'The Sweeney', in a 1975 series 2 episode called 'Faces', filmed at Southall Gasworks. There is another railway location in 'The Professionals' with a car chase / shoot out scene that was filmed in the old GWR Lambeth Goods depot next to Battersea Power Station, this episode was called 'Blind Run'. Villain I think you may have kicked my memory into gear Villian! Is Stratford sidings still there in some capacity - or has that totally vanished?
Thanks for the info!

Most of the yards and sidings at Stratford are now long gone Sparky, they've disappeared under the site of the Olympics venue. Villain

My new driving job involves a lot of deliveries in the Timperley and Altrincham areas and I've seen close up quite a lot of disused bridges and viaducts. This area has quite an interesting railway history. There are two lines still operating, one which is now the Manchester light metro system and the other which is part of the Manchester to Chester route, between Navigation Road and Altrincham. There used to be another route through here which went over the ship canal at Latchford and went through the Cheshire villages of Lymm and Heatley and Warburton. Part of the viaduct in Altrincham is still there but a part of the route has disappeared under a retail park.
It closed in 1985 as the shop canal bridge was in need of major works. I think part of the route is still in place as it did serve the refinery at Carrington but its not w disused.
Did you ever get on this line Villain? It's last traffic was coal to fiddlers ferry power station

The North West suffered quite badly under the Beeching cuts but a lot of it is still in situ. Villain

Never been south of the station - on the West Coast Mainline bit towards Stafford.
As a kid we used to regularly get the stopping service from Derby - via Stoke/Kidsgrove/Alsager on our Train Spotting outings.
We now live in Sheffield; to get to Crewe from here - you can go via Sheffield to Stockport - and that would cost nearly £60....
To go via Derby...
It costs £8 each return from Sheffield to Derby, and then a further £9 each return to Crewe from Derby - £34 - saving nearly £25. Splitting tickets do certainly work!!! I enjoy the run from Manchester Piccadilly down to Crewe - via Wilmslow - where you pass Jodrell Bank Radio Telescope.
We did Settle - Carlisle a few years ago, so totally nothing in both directions as it was foggy going, and pitch black on the return!!
Northern Rail (before the franchise got stripped) used to often run promotions, where you could collect 3 tokens from a local paper, and then buy a Day Rover for £10 - restricted to Northern Services only. None the less, we've had a run from Sheffield to Manchester, down to Crewe, back to Manchester, to Liverpool, to Manchester Vic across to Leeds, to York, across to Hull, down to Doncaster and back to Sheffield.
Some serious planning is required - and it's all based around the Signals working fine, Points working fine, trains not breaking down!!!!

I did the settle to Carlisle once, in 83, when it was being threatened with closure. Had to go on the west coast line to Carlisle then back down the S & C to Leeds. It was a class 40 with four or five mark 1 coaches. A great day out.

The last time I went over the S&C was December '82 in deep snow behind a steam heat fitted Class 47 with Mk1 stock, it was absolutely glorious going over the viaducts with the landscape completely covered in snow. It was a freebie trip at work as I'd just started on the railway that September, even with the steam heating turned up to full in our compartment it was freezing cold, it's a good job we all had our regulation big black BR overcoats on! Less than a year later I found myself at Stratford Works in East London being tutored on steam heat boilers fitted t o31s and 47s, I was probably one of the last to be trained on them before they were phased out.
