It's sometimes forgotten that the continental railways hung onto steam longer than we did, West Germany and France ran them until 1977, and managed the changeover to modern traction more gradually, saving money. Many of the Diesels that replaced our steam locos had a very short lifespan. I remember a trip past Vic Berry's scrap yard around 1983/4 is, and there were literally 100s of Cabs from Class 20s, 24 & 25s, 31s stacked for scrap. During August 1985, I was at Derby with my Brother - and a Convoy was hauled through going for scrap. That had about another 10 Class 25s and a couple of Peaks on there.
OK, it can be argued that the Class 44s, 23s, 52s, 41,42 & 43 "Warship" were all non standard, so were sadly retired earlier. Even though - many of them had only been in service for a decade.
Ironically, in 1976, the HST was brought in as a stop gap - and that became our saviour!
I was out and out against HS2 due to it's costs, though Villians explanation on why it's needed has swayed me. Though - he's right, how long will it be before that is at capacity, and we then need HS3?
The answer to solve the traffic issues on the Motorway is to add an extra lane.....that never has worked.
Whose bright idea was to use the hard shoulder as a lane, but only sometimes?

It's a cheap fix that didn't work. Sadly, some people have lost their lives as a result of breaking down and being stuck in a live lane.
There was something on the news about this in the week - and it was only a small section of the M62 that has the appropriate infrastructure to support this.
Keep the Hard Shoulder.

Some pictures....
Thanks to my Father in Law for this photo!
This is 40126, AKA D326 the loco that was involved in the Gt Train Robbery in 1963. In 1963, it would have been in Green. It is pictured here at Doncaster Works on 08/04/84 - shortly before it was cut up for scrap.
On 28/07/07, we had a trip out and about on a Rail Rover, and somehow ended up at Carlisle. Here's 40145 just outshopped after having new paintwork. You aren't at the controls are you Villian?
No, not me on 40 145 at Carlisle, I only go as far north as Crewe! Once I've sorted my PC problems out I'll start posting some of my old railway photos, including some taken at work . Villain

Villain Bloody typical! You don’t go south of the river! Only as far as Clapham and Battersea Guv, any further and I need me passport and the A-Z... (Actually one of my favourite bits of the job as there are loads of Sweeney / Minder / Villain locations on the two routes I drive on to get down to Clapham and Battersea). Villain

Villain I had to get up really early for work one morning, and happened to catch an episode of the Professionals on ITV4, typically for me, 1/2 way through. Bodie and Doyle were in a sequence dashing about a Rail Yard/Depot - darting between coaches and Locos.
I never did find what episode it was, and where the yard was.
Though it looked like there were a pile of EMU/DMU stabled to one side, a couple of 31s and 47s stabled up, and I think a 52 darts past in the background. So I'd guess, the episode was shot in 1976/77 (the 52s were withdrawn in 1977) - and only ran from Paddington out towards the West Country.
Would the depot be Southall?

Well Operation Susie featured railyards but was filmed in late 80.

I think the 'Professionals' episode you're thinking of with the coaches was filmed in Stratford carriage sidings in East London, the train going past slowly in the background was hauled by a Class 37. There are no Westerns in the series though, filming of the first series didn't start until June '77, four months after the last four Westerns were withdrawn. The Western / Class 52 dashing past in the background was in 'The Sweeney', in a 1975 series 2 episode called 'Faces', filmed at Southall Gasworks. There is another railway location in 'The Professionals' with a car chase / shoot out scene that was filmed in the old GWR Lambeth Goods depot next to Battersea Power Station, this episode was called 'Blind Run'.
