They were based on the Leyland National bus body, the 141s were the same width, the 142 was slightly enlarged. The chassis was derived from a long wheelbase freight wagon. Agree the first generation DMUs were better to ride in. Of the preserved 1st Gen DMUs that are around, I've always found them quite comfy. Though, they all have that musty damp smell! I used to like sitting behind the drivers cab and you could virtually get a Cab Ride. If I remember, those 1st Gen DMU used gears - like on a car.
I remember a 2 hour trip between Derby and Skegness on a Class 101 DMU. I don't think I could have done the trip on a 142/144! Most of the time we visited Skegness, it was a train pulled by 2 Class 20s.
East Midlands Trains/Railway were running Class 156 or Class 158s between Skegness and Nottingham. Also, they did an annual charter using a HST.

I think the first gen units were semi automatics, a bit like some buses were, there was a gear change and an epicyclic gearbox. A few were hydraulic, the class 127s on St Pancras to Bedford were, as were some of the Cravens ones

I've been reading up a bit recently about the Great Central line and it's run down, which seemed to start with regional boundary change s in 1958, when the GC section was transferred to London Midland Region control, away from the Eastern Region.
The LMR seemed to want to deliberately run it down and they used it as a dumping ground for run down and worn out locos that the rest of the region didn't want. The biggest depot on the GC was Annesley, and they pinched their best 9Fs for elsewhere, withdrew or transferred all their ex LNER types and replaced them with some Britannia s which were in very run down condition. Annesleys fitters managed to fettle these up a bit, so the LMR then snatched them back, and sent a batch of ex LMS Royal Scots in to replace them, all of which were in terrible condition, one was condemned immediately.
Not surprisingly the route was closed only 8 years later, which was sad, as it was a very well engineered line. Part of it is still going as a heritage line and the long Catesby tunnel is now used for testing F1 cars!

Another interesting project I've also heard of in connection with the Great Central was the Lancashire Derbyshire and East coast railway. It was the biggest single proposal ever given planning permission in one go and was very ambitious. It was to go from Sutton on sea, on the Lincolnshire coast, where a big new port would be built, and go West for 170 miles to near Warrington.
Only a bit was ever actually built, between Lincoln and Chesterfield. From Chesterfield it would cross the Peak District via a long tunnel and a 300 foot tall viaduct at Monsal Dale. The finance for this very expensive project couldn't be raised and the small bit actually built was taken over by the Great Central in 1907.
It included a big viaduct at Chesterfield called Horns Bridge, which had a mixture of brick arches and steel spans, which was very impressive, but the Peak District one would have been amazing

MODERATOR NOTE: This post has been moved from the "Get Carter" thread. STJust had a recap of this wonderful thread - top work Gene as always and the quality of the screen grabs is a real joy to behold. Bit of bonus trivia too - the Deltic which passes Jack's train near Tempsford is 9010 'The Queen's Own Scottish Borderer'. Those interested in 'Get Carter' might not be aware but there was some extra footage shot at Kings Cross station in July 1970 showing a class 47 (1507 or 1509 was the number I think) departing with a rake of Mk2 coaching stock, this was not used in the final cut though, probably because it was very slow paced and wouldn't have matched the title sequence, but it does appear in a compilation video / dvd called 'Diesels & Electrics On 35mm' from the John Huntley collection. Also featured in this collection is lots of footage shot for use in 'The Avengers', 'The Saint', 'The Champions' etc at various locations around the BR network, namely Luton, Watford Junction, Willesden, Wembley, Paddington and Saltford (near Bath). Villain My son has the Diesels on 35mm DVD - I was told a clip featured on Get Carter was on there. Not managed to find it! Managed to find a few Avengers clips though!
The passing Deltic is 9010? I assume that's now long gone?
Is there any idea what cab the camera was in - rumours say it was 9008 (that cab was currently preserved by Deltic Preservation society and located at Barrow Hill when I last saw it), other internet rumours say the camera wasn't in a Deltic... (how they know this beats me, unless they were driving it). I visited Doncaster Decoy on an Open Day about 7 or 8 years ago - it certainly doesn't look like that in Get Carter.

Yes sadly 9010 / 55 010 is long gone, it was withdrawn in December '81 but wasn't lucky enough to be preserved. I know some people think the footage was shot from the cab of a Deltic but if it was the camera would have been mounted very high up and the top of the nose would have been in view, it's this that makes me think it was actually filmed from the cab of a 47. Having driven about two hundred 47s and had cab rides on eight of the twenty two Deltics I can confirm that the top of the windscreen on a 47 is lower than the nose of a Deltic! . I think there are three volumes of 'D&E On 35mm' but I can't remember which one the 'Get Carter' footage is in. Villain
