Now I have completed The Sweeney locations, I thought I'd start to rebuild the Life On Mars locations section of 4:3tv. There are a few gaps still to fill in, and the old location list only had thumbnail images which were difficult to see, so I will be recreating the whole lot in the same style as the Sweeney list I compiled.
Life On Mars, though only filmed almost 15 years ago, presents a new set of problems in identifying locations when compared to The Sweeney as CGI was used for some scenes so you are basically looking for buildings or features that didn't even exist! It's also surprising how a lot of the areas used for filming have changed more so than those in The Sweeney.
I've now completed the first episode, complete with all new screen grabs and corresponding street or aerial views.
This has been the hardest one to complete so far. The pre credits chase sequence was filmed in an area that was about to be wiped away forever. Empty streets full of boarded up houses were used to great effect as Gene chases down the villains in a Rover 2000. Very soon after filming, not only were the houses demolished, but whole streets were completely swept away to make way for the new Lime Square shopping complex in Openshaw. A little bit of history gone forever but captured for eternity in Life On Mars. Nailing the locations meant I had to dig out the old overlay mapping again and as with the Sweeney it proved invaluable.
So that's Series 1 completed. A short break and then I'll get onto Series 2.
