Fortunately I think most of those Human League performances are on this DVD, minus the DJ's.
Just out of interest Sparky does it cost a lot - man hours I assume, for TV companies to do edits to original footage etc. I reckon with the software available now it shouldn't but...
To be honest - I wouldn't have thought it'd be that expensive, as the episodes were/are being transferred to digital means anyway. But I suppose it depends on how it would be done - if it was done in house via the BBC's Restoration unit it wouldn't cost as much of the work being outsourced.
But I suppose the way the BBC look at it would be that there isn't the real need and interest to edit such episodes - so couldn't justify spending Licence Fee money on editing them just for showing once (or twice) on BBC4. After all - if the performances are required to be shown as part of another retrospective music show - the performance only can be dubbed onto another tape for adding into the programme.
Though on the same token; they will happily spend Licence Fee money on paying people to trawl through archive material to find anything that may appear offensive and un-PC, then either edit it, or bloop/re-dubb dialogue. That costs quite a bit too. It will all bottle down to Priorities I think!
Many of the episodes presented by Mike Smith were dropped - as he refused to let the BBC re-show them. Since his death, his wife Sarah Greene wanted the BBC to keep to his wishes.
The bit I don't understand is why the BBC needed permission from Mike in the first place. As he was a BBC employee, so the programme was a product of his employer. Must have had some kind of agreement.

I noticed that Simply Media has a Vimeo channel where you can buy some of their shows to stream & download. Not a big selection but there are a few things of interest.

Thanks Arthur!
I notice the "Protect & Survive" films are on there too! Also the first "Fred Dibnah" documentary from 1979 too - I haven't seen that.
