Triang and Hornby Dublo trains, some dating back to the 50s, which I picked up second hand when I was at school, some bought for birthdays and Christmas, I've had them since I was a kid, and they all still run! A few books and magazines I've had for years, and a few Dinky and Corgi cars. Are the early Dublo model trains the ones that used 3 rail track?
I'm sure I read that some early electric train sets used mains powered motors - so the track would be at mains potential when in use.... flipping heck

I've got a lot of O gauge Hornby, that's the bigger gauge.
Plus my Meccano set somewhere.
A Captain Scarlet SPV, with firing missile and Batmobile.

Yes, the early Dublo models were 3 rail, they changed to 2 rail in 1959. The problem was that the 2 rail system was designed by a scale modeller and the electrics were complicated and difficult to put together. Sales flopped and people went for the simpler, more reliable and cheaper Triang trackwork instead. Dublo also had to keep the incompatible 3 rail in production alongside the 2 rail and they got into financial trouble and were taken over by Triang in 1964. Also, yes, some very early (1920s) sets were live from the mains, they were very quickly banned.

I live in Margate so I am only a stones throw from the Hornby offices and museum (where the old factory used to be also) and they have great displays of all the 'old stuff'...
It's amazing how all these old toys and games bring back memories isn't it?!

I'd like to see the Hornby museum, the Margate location was Triangs factory originally, Hornby Dublo were made at Binns Road, Liverpool. When they merged in 1964 it then became Triang Hornby, but later just Hornby.
Dublo 3 rail track and die cast metal locos were massively over engineered and was indestructible and idiot proof. The fact that they are all now 60+years old and there are still huge numbers of them out there proves this

So as you say, there's still loads out there.
Was the Carriages and Locomotives made out of tin or something?

I have a load of track and some rolling stock. It seems fairly cheap on ebay. Some of the special engines are expensive but mine is fairly ordinary clockwork one.

The locos were die cast metal, the wagons and coaches were printed tin, but changed to plastic bodies with metal chassis at the same time as the change to 2 rail. The last two locos which came out before they went bust, the R1 class tank and the class 20 diesel had plastic bodies too
